ISOSTEARIC ACID ESTERS

Snezana Baljak

Annual Business Unit Meeting 2017

Isostearic acid is unique by its branched molecule structure : it combines
the best of 2 worlds : the physical properties of an oleic acid is combined
with the chemical stability of a stearic acid.
This is a saturated fatty acid liquid at 0°C due to branched structures that is
ultrastable at high temperatures and resists UV radiation.

Global isostearic acid market demand was 46.0 kilo tons in 2012.
Growth of personal care industry particularly in emerging markets of Asia Pacific and
Latin America is expected to remain a key driving factor for global isostearic acid
market.
Isostearic acid’s oxidation and odour stability make them a suitable ingredient for
personal care products.
Myriad isostearic acid applications for personal care products include skin care, hair
care, liquid soaps, bath & shower products, sun protection creams and lip colour
cosmetics.
Isostearic acid ingredient acts as cleaning agents, emollient or emulsifier depending
upon the type of personal care product manufactured.
Growing consumer awareness regarding bio-ingredient based products coupled with
rising health concern is also expected to augment isostearic acid market over the
forecast period.
Increasing natural products demand on account of potential harm caused due to use of
toxic agents produced by petrochemical products has prompted the use of isostearic
acid. It includes numerous chemical ester derivatives used in personal care and
cosmetics products.
These chemical esters functions in cosmetics and personal care products include
dispersion, adhesion pigment promoters, solubilizer, emollient, effective solvent,
plasticizer and water repellent.

High price of Isostearic acid on account of its limited supply is expected to pose a major challenge for
market penetration
Global isostearic acid market is highly consolidated with top two manufacturers accounting for over three-
fourth of the market. Industry participants compete on the basis of services offered in the market according
to applications of cosmetics and bio-lubricant applicantions Key industry participants include Croda
International and Arizona chemicals. Other major industry participants operating in this segment include
Nissan Chemicals, Olean NV, Emery Oleochemicals and Jarchem Industries, Inc.
Global isostearic acid demand was 48.2 kilo tons in 2013 and is expected to reach 67.5 kilo tons by 2020,
growing at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2014 to 2020.
Europe was the leading regional market and accounted for 32.0% of total consumption in 2013. Europe is
expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period.

Isostearic Acid Esters for Personal Care Applications
 Ideal for heat sensitive formulations requiring cold process
methods. (-> Cloud point below 10℃)
 Assuring stable odour and colour quality in end
formulations.
 Effective pigment dispersants in colour cosmetics.
 In general, all isostearic acid esters feature a distinct
moisturizing touch on the applied surface, leaving a lipid
film with no greasy after feel.
