Terminologies

in Basic
MECHANICS
By: Agustin A. Pandoma
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, students would be able
to;
a) Define basic terminologies in Basic Mechanics,
b) Differentiate the basic terminologies from one
another and;
c) Create a concept map showing the relationship
between the terminologies in Basic Mechanics.
Speed
It measures how fast an object is.
 it is a output of an object moving across a distance
over a period of time

Distance
The magnitude of displacement between two points.
Usually measured in length.
Velocity
Speed in a given direction.

Time
The interval over which change occurs.

Acceleration
The rate at which an object’s velocity changes over a
period of time.
It is unit is measured as m/s2
Displacement
The change in a position of an object.
Usually measured in length.

Average Speed
Distance travelled divided by the time during which
the motions occurs.
Average Acceleration
The change in velocity divided by the time over which
it changes.

Average Velocity
Displacement divided by the time over which
displacement occurs.
Vector
A quantity that has both magnitude an direction.
Ex. 35km due North.

Scalar
A quantity that is described by magnitude, but not
direction.
Ex. 35km
Resultant
The sum of two or more vectors.

Projectile
An object that travels the air and experiences only
acceleration due to gravity
Energy
The ability to do work
It could either be;
a. Potential Energy
- an energy at rest.
- stored energy
b. Kinetic Energy
- energy in motion
