INTRODUCTION
• Aquaponics is the integration of
aquaculture and hydroponics which deals
to a closed production system with soilless
culture.

systems consist of
network of pipes
and pumps that
circulate waste
water from a
freshwater fish tank

garden beds.
INTRODUCTION
• Advantage of using aquaponics system:
– no use of external nitrogen fertilization;
– complete reuse of water;
– better climatic control for fish growth than
pond systems;
– has a higher system resiliency due to
symbiotic presence of microorganism;
– it has a lower nutrients concentration rather
than hydroponics up to 10x efficiency of water
use.
Statement of the Problem

production of three leafy plants in
recirculating aquaponics system.

– Dissolved Oxygen (DO) level - Turbidity
– Nitrate (NO3) - Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
– Nitrogen – Total
Statement of the Problem
2. What are the growth rate of Pechay,
Mustasa and Lettuce in aquaponics

3. What is the survival rate of Pechay,
Mustasa and Lettuce?
4. Is there significance differences in the
growth performance of:
– Pechay - Mustasa - Lettuce

sativa), and Black Mustard Seed or
Mustasa (Brassica juncea) and Red tilapia
were used in the study.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

• One fish tank stocked with 300 red tilapia

#24 fingerlings was used.
• The experiment started from the planting
of pechay, mustasa and lettuce seeds until
they reached specific length in 30 days.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

• Commercial feeds were used as food

of the fish.
• The pH, Turbidity, DO level, TDS,
Ammonia, Nitrogen – Total, Nitrate
was monitored and tested.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

• The study focused on the growth

performance and survival rate of the
Lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Pechay (Brassica
rapa), and Black Mustard Seed or
Mustasa (Brassica juncea) with the use of
Red Tilapia.
• Specific growth rate and survival rate were
observed daily.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

• Identification of the cause of mortality of

tilapia; inclusion of fertilizer as pond
preparation and the comparison of
commercial production of tilapia through
body weight, size, the growth rate and
survival rate of Red Tilapia were not
included in the study.

METHODOLOGY
• Gathering of #24 fingerling red tilapia at
BFAR Region IV – A office
METHODOLOGY
• Experimental Design. This study used
completely randomized design (CRD) as its
experimental design. Randomization using
simple random sampling (SRS) was applied
to determine the position of each replicates.
The study has 3 treatments and 9 replicates
with a total number of 27 experimental units.
Treatment 1 was the Lettuce Seeds while
Treatment 2 was the Pechay Seeds and the

Treatment 2 – Pechay 51.79a (±8.33)
Treatment 3 – Mustasa 26.34b (±5.23)
Note: Means within the column having a different superscript are significantly
different to each other. The mean difference is significant at the 0.05 level.

* Treatment 2 was the most produced vegetable plants among

the rest treatments.
* Treatment 3 - only 2 replicates was produced a proper
growth.
CONCLUSION
• The level of ranges of physico-chemical
parameters is highly different for the
optimal water quality values for productive
and well performing Aquaponics Systems
for Tilapia.
• But in terms of pH, it was maintained by
the ideal scale of 7.0 which is similar to the
study of Sallenave (2016).
CONCLUSION
• In terms of survival rate, pechay was
recorded the most survived plant at 67%.
• There is significant difference (p<0.05) in
terms of growth performance of pechay
and mustasa.
• Therefore, the Pechay was the most
appropriate vegetable plant in aquaponics
system.
Recommendation
The researchers recommend further
study regarding the germination process of
each leafy plants specifically in Lettuce
seeds. Likewise, the researchers must use
the leafy plants with similar time of
germinating process and growth like
Mustasa and Pechay seeds.
Recommendation
• Furthermore, it was also recommended to
build an experimental setup in ideal
environment with an ideal temperature of
25–30 C with a proper connection of hose
in each PVC pipe.
