WHY IS IT NECESSARY?
As the vehicle population grew about 300% when compared to road growth
between the year 1995-2010, it is necessary to develop techniques to reduce
➔ Traffic congestions
➔ To provide safety to the people
➔ To be cost efficient
CRASH CUSHION

NECESSITY:

➢ It is present at the start of the median.

➢ It is the most common area for crashes.
➢ They are used to absorb the impact of
vehicles when a collision occur in it,
thereby reducing the damage.
CRASH CUSHION
➔ Crash cushions are constructed of multiple segments, which crumble into
each other when collided, to absorb the impact.
➔ Their main benefit is in their reusability; these cushions can automatically
return to their original position after a crash for speed from 50-113 km/h.
➔ Crash Cushions can shield colliders with widths up to 2.6 m (102”).
CONTACTLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM
NECESSITY:

➢ To reduce travel time by avoiding

toll booths.
➢ To be fuel efficient by reducing the
waiting time.
➢ To reduce man power for works.
➢ To promote cashless transaction.
CONTACTLESS PAYMENT SYSTEM
➔ RFIDs are particularly suited to
electronic Toll collection systems.
➔ RFID tags are used to carry payment
information.
➔ Tags attached to vehicles or carried
by people transmit payment
information to a fixed reader
attached to a Toll station.
➔ Payments are then routinely
deducted from a users account.
Green Link Determining (GLIDE) System
➔ RFIDs are particularly suited to electronic Toll collection systems.
➔ RFID tags are used to carry payment information.
➔ Tags attached to vehicles or carried by people transmit payment information to a
fixed reader attached to a Toll station.
➔ Payments are then routinely deducted from a users account.
Green Link Determining (GLIDE) System
➔ This method is followed in
Singapore.
➔ It has wire sensors beneath the road
surface of junctions to sense the
presence of vehicles.
➔ Adjust green time in response to
traffic flow.
➔ It links adjacent traffic signals also
to allow vehicles to travel from one
junction to another with minimal
stops.
GLOW IN THE DARK ROAD MARKINGS
NECESSITY:

➔ Can be used as an alternatively to reflectors.

➔ It can be cost efficient.
GLOW IN THE DARK MARKINGS
➔ Such markings are already made
available on the roads in Netherland.
➔ The markings are made using paint
that contains photo-luminising
powder that charges up during the
day and illuminate in night time.
➔ The main composition of the paint is
Europium,Dysprosium,Gadolinium,
scandium.
ENERGY SAVING LIGHTS
NECESSITY:

➢ To reduce the electric power consumption.

➢ To avoid the necessity of switching off during the day time and switching
it on during night time (i.e..,) to reduce man power.
WIND POWERED LIGHTS
➔ Wind-powered lights consists of a
pinwheels which is set up along the car
path.
➔ The pinwheels rotate while the car
passes through it and produces
electricity and light up the lamp
connected to it.
➔ Since it requires wind to power up,
these wind-powered lights will only
light up as cars pass by the area.
INTERACTIVE LIGHTS
➔ Interactive Light works in this sense:
when a car approaches at a
particular stretch of a road, the
motion sensors present across the
road will light up only that section of
the road.
➔ The lights will grow brighter as the
car comes closer and will slowly dim
away as it passes.
➔ These Lights are perfect for
highways that are less-travelled or
not always packed with cars as it
saves electricity of street lights.
Solar panel roads
➔ Energy harnessed from toughened solar panels
on roads where vehicles can pass by.
➔ The roadway is made of translucent concrete
material (made of optical fibres) at top, solar
panels beneath it and has a insulation material at
the base.
➔ The first solar panel highway is present in the
shangdon province which covers an area of 5875
square feet.
➔ The engineers of the project estimated that they
can about produce up to 1 gigawatt of energy per
year using the solar panel roads.
ELECTRICITY PRIORITY LANE
NECESSITY:

➢ This is especially useful with the

growing electric vehicles (EV)
➢ To avoid time wastage for
charging the vehicle.
➢ Can promote the usage of EV’s
for long journeys too.
➢ This will ensure that electric cars
do not require to look for
charging stations.
ELECTRICITY PRIORITY LANE
➔ Electric vehicles (EV) user can
charge up their vehicle on the
go, and they can do this just by
driving on a lane known as
induction priority lane.
➔ The Induction Priority Lane will
have embedded magnetic
fields that can charge the
vehicle while it is on the go.
➔ .
Movable barrier system
NECESSITY:

➔ It reduces the traffic congestion

during peak hours.
➔ They can be used when there is
a ongoing construction work
➔ It can divert traffic easily.
Movable barrier system
➔ It moves the barrier from one lane to the
adjacent lane to reduce the traffic
produced on one side of the road by
relieving the traffic by introducing an extra
lane from the opposite adjacent lane.
➔ The machine used for this is the zipper
machine and the lanes created by it is
known as zipper lanes.
➔ The vehicle contains an S-shaped, inverted
conveyor channel in its undercarriage
which lifts the barrier segments off the road
surface and transfers them over to the
other side of the lane.
CONCLUSION

These solutions need to be perfected through further research and have to be

produced in a cost efficient manner to be implemented on a larger scale, to adjust
to the ever increasing traffic problems.
