National Policy on

Education

(NPE 1986)
Introduction
• The National Policy on Education is a document that
covers all aspects of education from elementary to
university level and even adult education in both rural
and urban India. This policy was formulated by the
government of India to promote education amongst
India’s people. The first NPE policy was promulgated in
1968 by the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,
and the second by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.
Need of NPE
Qualitative development of education.
Enhancement of percentage of literacy.

Implementation of free and compulsory education.
Removal of wastage and segmentation of education.

Introductory definition- NPE is a policy formulated by the

Neighbourhood schools has been completely neglected.

The Future
The future shape of education in India is too complex to
evaluate with precision but our tradition always put a
high place to intellectual and spiritual attainment; we
are bound to succeed in achieving our objectives.
The main task is to strengthen the base of the Pyramid.
Equally it is important to ensure that those at the top of
the pyramid are amongst the best in the world.
