This document discusses steam generation and distribution on board ships. It outlines the typical steam generation cycle, including the main components of marine boilers and their basic working principle. The two main types of boilers are water-tube and fire-tube boilers. Steam is used on ships for main engine propulsion, power generation, auxiliary machinery, fresh water generation, heating duties, and operating pumps and deck machinery. Pipes of different colors are used to distribute steam and other utilities around the ship.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE i. Typical steam generation cycle ii. Definition and main types of boilers iii. Main components of the boiler iv. Working principle of a boiler v. Main uses of steam on board a ship vi. Steam generation and distribution TYPICAL STEAM GENERATION CYCLE MARINE BOILER Refers to a closed vessel in which steam is generated from water by the application of heat. There are two types of boiler mainly use in the Marine Industry, Water-tube boilers Fire-tube boilers. MAIN COMPONENTS OF A MARINE BOILER i. Hot well- supplying water at high temperature to the boiler. ii. Feed water pump- supply and maintain water level inside the boiler. iii. Exhaust gas boiler- generates additional steam using main engine exhaust iv. Exhaust Gas Water Circulation Pump- supply hot water inside the exhaust gas boiler v. Main and Auxiliary Steam system- supply steam generated to various systems for consumption. vi. Steam dump condenser- cool the excess steam and returns to the hot well. BASIC WORKING PRINCIPLE OF A BOILER Water is heated by flames or hot gases which are produced by combustion of fuels. Steam is then generated in the boiler at different pressure according to Steam boiler's size and it's specification. That steam is then passed through a pipe to the main and auxiliary steam system. MAIN USES OF STEAM ON BOARD A SHIP Main Engine Propulsion/Turbines in case of steam ships Power Generation to run steam turbo generators Running Auxiliary Machinery in case of steam ships For Fresh water generation (Evaporators) For heating duties For fuel tank heating Operating Bilge, Stripping and other steam driven pumps For tank washing in tanker ships and general cleaning For Driving steam driven deck machinery like winches etc. STEAM USAGE IN HEAT EXCHANGER STEAM GENERATION AND DISTRIBUTION PIPES COLOR GROUPS •Blue – Fresh Water •Red – Fire Fighting Solutions •Black – Waste Media •Brown – Fuel •Orange – Oils, but not fuel oils. •Green – Sea Water •Silver – Steam •Copper – Masses •Yellow – Flammable Gases •Violet – Acids and Alkalis •Gray – Non-Flammable Gases •White – Air in Ventilation Systems THE END Thanks for your audience
