Shower Enclosures : The Concept
Shower Enclosure : The Concept

• What is a Shower Enclosure ?

– A water tight compartment that seperates wet and Dry area in
the Bathroom

• Utility ?
– Wet and Dry Area
– Compact – saves space
– Enhances the internal décor of the Bathroom

• Need
– Every body needs a Shower Enclosure
– Utility Product and not a life style concept
Shower Enclosure as Customer Need :

 A Shower Enclosure gives :

: Cleanliness
: Comfort
: Ease of Life
: Sense of Fulfillment – Style
: Aesthetic beauty of the Bathroom

and above all : SAFETY

Shower Enclosure as Basic Need

 Enclosure is a Basic Need :

 Every body needs a Shower Enclosure
 Utility / Functional Product and not a life style concept
Jaquar Shower Enclosures :

• Complete Product
– Comes as a complete Product with Glass and Hardware

• One Stop Solution

– Design – Installation – Maintenance

• Quality
– Hardware
– Glass

Jaquar Shower Enclosures :
The Product Range
Shower Enclosures :

• 2 Main Components :
– Glass
– Hardware
Tempered Glass or Toughened Glass
Tempering / Toughening :

• Tempering / Toughening
– Tempering / Toughening – Both are same ,
Both the terms are used in India
– Fully and properly tempered glass is also called
Safety Glass in Local Glass Market
UnderstandingTempering :

• Tempered Glass
– Glass subjected to Controlled Heating and
Cooling Process in order to significantly increase
its resistance to Mechanical and Thermal stress
– Mechanical Stress - Wind Load , Impact etc.
– Thermal stress – Temperature Variation in Glass Pane
Tempering Process :

• Raw Float Glass is heated to a temperature of 675 – 700°c in a Furnace

and then cooled suddenly in a chamber with air blown from all sides.
• Cooling brings the temperature from 700° to 60°
• Due to cooling the surface starts cooling whereas the core is still hot. The
molecules on the surface become solid. After some time the core molecules
also start cooling , contracts and tries to pull the surface molecules.
• Already the molecules on the surface are solid which does not allow
contraction. This difference in expansion and contraction produces
differential stress
• A compressive stress develops at the centre and a tensile stress at the core
• When an impact happens , it has to breach the compressive layer to break
glass
• When the compressive layer is breached , the energy built up is released
quickly causing the entire glass to break into small pieces.
Heating Glass :

Heating upto a temp. of 675 – 700 C

Principles of Tempered Glass :

• Due to cooling the surface starts cooling

whereas the core is still hot. The molecules on
the surface become solid. After some time the
core molecules also start cooling , contracts
and tries to pull the surface molecules.

Fast cooling of the Surface

Principles of Tempered Glass :

• Already the molecules on the surface are solid

which does not allow contraction. This
difference in expansion and contraction
produces differential stress

Slow Cooling of the Core

Principles of Tempering:

A compressive stress develops at the centre and a tensile

stress at the core
 When an impact happens , it has to breach the
compressive layer to break glass
When the compressive layer is breached , the energy built
up is released quickly causing the entire glass to break into
small pieces.

Slow Cooling of the Core

Thermally Tempered Glass
Normal Glass vs Tempered glass :
Advantages of Tempered Glass :

• 4 -5 times stronger than normal Float Glass

• Breaks into small pcs ( called Particles or dices )
thus providing safety and minimizing chances of
Injury
• Can resist thermal stress as edge strength is higher
• Can withstand temp. difference of 240 ( crucial
factor in case of electrical appliances like ovens , hot
plates etc. )
Defects of Poorly Tempered Glass :

• Waviness on the Glass Surface

• Spots
• Scratches
• Particle Count – Less as specified
Standard for Tempered Glass :

• Most commonly Used test is Fragmentation Test

• Fragmentation Test :
– To check the Breakage Pattern of Tempered Glass – 50mm
x 50mm portion of broken tempered glass is taken from
the central part
– Minimum particle count should be :

Thickness of Glass Min. Particle Count

3 mm 15
4 mm – 12 mm 40
15mm – 19 mm 30

Ensuring Quality : Tempering Standards

 Quality Related Specifications for Glass :

 Critical Product Parameters to ensure Quality and hence ensuring
Safety for the customers
 Reference : India
o IS 2553 ( Part 1 : 1990 )
o IS 14900 : 2000
o IS 2835 : 1987

 Reference : Europe
o Adheres to European toughening norms

 Standards are actually Jaquar Standards which is a mix of Europe

and Indian Standards
Ensuring quality :

 Fragmentation Test :
– Most important parameter for Quality of tempered glass
– At Jaquar , samples are regularly tested for Particle count
– A sample Test Report is :

IMPACT No. OF FRAGMENTS No. OF FRAGMENTS No. OF ELONGATED FRAGMENTS

 State Level Players exclusively dealing in Enclosures

 Unorganised Competition
• Glass Retailers
• Small time contractors
• Tempering Units
Managing Competition :

 Ceramic Trade ( Cera , Johnson , Hindware , Parryware )

• All material imported from China
• Lowest quality Chinese Material
• Limited Options : Mostly Sliding or Corner
• Limited Sizes : only one or two
• No dedicated Team for Selling Enclosure , so lilited Technical
Support
• Buisness Model : Import , keep stocks for sometime and then
offload by giving discount
• Service
• No Pre / Post Installation Support
• Spare Parts availability
• No Customer Service
Managing Competition :

 Ceramic Trade ( Kohler ) :

• Just Started
• No presence
• But keep an eye on their movement
Managing Competition :

:
• Rising Tribe with the concept becoming popular
• Going to be a challenge so keep an eye on their

More thickness required when size is more or
Traffic is high
After Tempering , strength is more or less
same
So 8 mm is more than sufficient for Shower
Enclosure

Strategy for Standard Sizes for 2014 is :

1. Start talking about the Concept vigorously

 Make it a point to talk about the concept in every meeting …be it an
Architect or Builder or Dealer
 In every AD / MD / RD meet , 10 minutes to be devoted on Standard
Sizes

2. Focused Approach
Standard Sizes : way forward

Focused Approach means :

 Focus more on CORNER enclosure

 Convert from Wall to Wall …..CORNER
 Develop Market for CORNER Enclosures

FOCUS CONVERT DEVELOP

Standard Sizes : Corner Enclosure

Why Corner Enclosure :

1. Saves Space
 The most precious comodity in any city around the world today is :
Space
 Space Saved means
o Financial Benefit : 5000 /- per sft saved = 20000 /- in 1 B/R = 60000 /- in a 3 BHK
= 60 Lacs in 100 Flat Project
o Additional Amenities :
• For a smaller B/R : A rack / Cupboard / Flower Vas
• For a Bigger B/R : A whirlpool making it a 4 Zone B/R
