ZOOLOGY
Zoology
•is the subdivision
of biology that
deals with the
organization,
behavior,
function and
evolution of
animals.
What is the Importance of studying Zoology?

Zoology is important for many reason.

for one, the study of animals and
communities provides insight into how
“life” works and consequently, how we
work.
Branches
of
zoology
Mammalogy
•branch of
zoology
that is
concern
with the
study of
mammals.
What is a mammal?

Mammals, which appeared

more than 200 million years
ago, are the group of
vertebrates to which human
beings belong. Mammals live
all over the world and
include...
hIPPOPOTAMUS

Hippopotamuses
romping in the
African heat.
Killer whales

Killer whales
breaching in
the Oceana.
Brown Bear

Alaskan brown
bear are warm-
blooded, meaning
they can regulate
their body
temperature to
keep cool in the
summer.
Herpetology
•branch of
zoology
concerned
with the
study of
amphibians.
What is an Amphibian?

Amphibian, one of a large class of cold-

blooded vertebrates (animals with
backbones). The name comes from Greek
words meaning dual life, because most
amphibians spend the early part of their
life cycle in water and the later part on
land.
Amphibians include frogs, toads,
and salamanders.
SALAMANDER
• Salamander, a
tailed
amphibian.
Salamanders
are cold-blooded
animals
• Most species
are found on
land; a few are
strictly aquatic.
TREE FROG
Tree Frog, or Tree
Toad, any of
several kinds of
climbing frogs or
toads. Most live in
trees, but some
inhabit smaller
plants, and a few
species are
ground-dwellers.
CANE TOAD
The cane toad is
native to Central
and South
America, and an
invasive species
in Australia. It was
introduced to
Australia in 1935
to protect crops
against cane
beetles.
The skin of an amphibians are very thin
and must always be kept wet, because
amphibians breath through their skin.
they do have lungs, but their lungs
are small and are not used very much.
What are the difference of Toads between Frogs?
Frogs have smooth, wet skin that looks
slimy. Toads have drier, rough skin that
looks really bumpy.
Frogs have skinnier bodies than toads
to. Toads are kind of wide and look fat.
Frogs also have longer legs and
webbed hind feet, but toads don’t need
long jumping legs because they walk
Ichthyology
• Ichthys from the
Koine Greek word
“fish”.

•branch of zoology
devoted to the study
of fish.
EUROPEAN EEL

European Eel:
Unusual life
cycle spawns
overfishing.
MALTESE RAY

Maltese Ray:
Now only
found in the
Straits of
Sicily.
GOLIATH GROUPER

Goliath
Grouper:
Their
harvesting
has been
banned.
The body of the fish is covered in
scales and has fins attached to help
It move through the water.
Fish breath using gills w/c take oxygen
out of the water.
Malacology
•branch of
invertebrate
zoology that
deals with the
study of the
Mollusca
(mollusks or
molluscs).
Squid

Squid are actually

mollusks, although
they look much
different from their
relatives the
gastropods
(snails), and
bivalves (clams).
clam

Clam, the popular

name for a
number of two-
shelled mollusks
related to the
scallops and
oysters.
shipworm

Shipworm, or
Teredo, name for
a family of shelled
marine animals.
Although they
resemble worms,
shipworms are
mollusks.
What is Mollusks?
Invertebrate creatures w/ soft,
unsegmented bodies. Many of w/c
house themselves in shells. This
fascinating and highly diverse group
Of animals includes more than
100,000 species, Ranging in size
from snail so small that we can barely
see them unlike giant squids more
than 60 feet long.
Arachnology
•scientific study
of spiders and
related animals
such as
scorpions,
pseudoscorpions,
harvestmen,
collectively
called arachnids.
Black widow

Black widows are

one the most
poisonous and
dangerous spiders in
the world. They are
found throughout the
U.S., but
predominantly in the
South and West.
Goliath bird-eater
The world's
largest tarantula
is the Goliath
birdeater
tarantula. Its leg
span can be
more than 10
inches.
Scorpion
• Scorpion, an
animal related to
spiders, mites, and
ticks. The scorpion
lives in warm, dry
regions and in the
tropics. Scorpion
venom can be
deadly to many
animals, including
humans.
Spiders belong to a group of animals
called “arachnids”. Scorpions, mites,
and ticks are also part of the arachnid
family. Arachnids are creatures with
two body segments, eight legs, no
wings or antennae and are not able to
chew. Many people think that spiders
are insects but they are mistaken since
insects have six legs and three main
body parts. Most insects have wings.
Animals also have a great impact
on our lives: they provide us w/
food, companionship, and w/ a
sense of wonder.
