SPEECH STYLES

SPEECH STYLES
■ These are patterns of speaking characterized by
distinctive pronunciation, vocabulary, intent,
participants, and grammatical structures.
■ Martin Jacobs claimed the existence of the five
kinds of styles in the following order
Intimate, casual, consultative, formal and frozen.
1. Intimate Style
■ Used between people who have very close
relationship such as family members, best
friends, and couples.
2. Casual Style
■ A conversational style used among friends.
■ This is the basis for all the characteristics of
casual style that will be mentioned here.
■ Example: “Meet at the mall?”
“Bought it yesterday. Makes no difference”
3. Consultative Style
■ The speaker constantly observed the
listener’s verbal and non verbal cues for
feedback as to whether the speaker seems to
be giving too little or too much information.
4. Formal Style
■ Called upon when speaking in formal settings
no matter how much the participants are
related to each other.
■ Depends on the educational system of the
two people talking to each other.
5. Frozen Style
■ A very formal style not really intended to give
a particular message but to allow a reader to
find many meanings for oneself.
■ It exists as literature for a community.
