8th Stage Stator Vanes – Failure description

8th Stage Stator Vanes

nov-05 2 Avio Property

Boroscope inspection - 8th Stage Stator Vanes

THE REASON FOR SPECIAL INSTRUCTION:

To provide a written procedure on how to borescope inspect 8th stage stator vanes for….

•“On wing” – engines installed on the aircraft.

• “In the shop” – engines in the shop where, for the High Pressure
Compressor (HPC), is not requested any repair/overhaul in which the
level of disassembly allows to have the 8th stage stator in piece part for
the NDT/Visual inspection

Boroscope inspection - 8th Stage Stator Vanes

DESCRIPTION:

• The objective of this inspection is to perform a visual

inspection on the 8th stage HPC vane for the JT8D-
200 engine to detect T/E cracks that are progressing
forward in the airfoil.

ACCOMPLISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS:

• Engine must be cool to touch or below 100 degrees F (38° C) before

performing the inspection.

•Removal of either the 8th stage bleed duct for the engine anti-ice or
the 8th stage bleed air duct for the aircraft system (Low/High pressure)

•The duct from either side must be removed to inspect all areas for
possible cracking (See figure 1)

Boroscope inspection - 8th Stage Stator Vanes

Inspection Procedure (cont’d):

• Slowly withdraw the borescope and inspect each vane on the

lower half of the engine for cracks.

• The inspection should concentrate on the vane O/D end. As an option

the borescope can be articulated to view the entire airfoil, down to the
I/D shroud.

Inspection Procedure (cont’d):

• Perform the above mention inspection procedure for the upper

half of the engine

• Ensure that a complete 360-degree inspection of the vanes has been

accomplished.

•Take picture of any discrepancies and

report to the engineering department.
