Skeletal System

Facts & Functions

About the System:
• The System performs vital functions — support,
movement, protection, and blood cell production.
• The adult human skeletal system consist of 206 bones
• The Skeletal System also consists a network of
tendons, ligaments and cartilage that connects the
bones.
• A tendon is a band of tissue that connects muscle to
bone
• Cartilage is a soft, gel-like
padding between bones
that protects joints and
facilitates movement.
• A ligament is an elastic
band of tissue that
connects bone to bone
and provides stability to
the joint
• In the middle of
some bones is
jelly-like bone
marrow, where
new cells are
constantly being
produced for
blood.
Examples of Diseases:

• Osteoporosis: This is a disease in which the bones

become fragile and prone to fracture.
• Leukemia: This is a cancer of the white blood cells.
• Scoliosis: sideways curvature of the spine that occurs
most often during the growth spurt just before puberty.
• Osteomalacia: condition in which the bones of an adult
progressively soften because of inadequate
mineralization of the bone (In children the condition is
called rickets).
• Rickets: is a skeletal disorder that's caused by a lack of
vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate and people with
rickets may have weak and soft bones, stunted growth,
and, in severe cases, skeletal deformities.
Muscular System
Facts & Functions
About the System:
• The muscular system is an organ system consisting
of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles.
• permits movement of the body, maintains posture
and circulates blood throughout the body.
• Cardiac and Smooth muscles are involuntary
muscles.
• Most skeletal muscles are attached to bones by
bundles of collagen fibers known as tendons.
• The gluteus maximus is
the body's largest muscle.
It is in the buttocks and
helps humans maintain an
upright posture.
Examples of Diseases:

• Polymyositis: which is characterized by inflammation

and progressive weakening of the skeletal muscles.
• Sprain: a stretch or tear of a ligament.
• Strain: a stretch or tear of a muscle or tendon.
• Cramp or Spasm: a sudden involuntary muscle
contraction after over-activity or due to dehydration.
• Tendinosis: is a condition that is characterized by
swelling and pain of a tendon.
