 FRAME OF THEORY
The main theory : Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson (1987) better known as Brown
and Levinson theory of politeness.

Politeness theory was initiated by Brown and Levinson in their book entitled Politeness: Some
Universals in Language Usage. Brown and Levinson (1987) categorize into four main strategies of
politeness strategy, namely
• Balad on Record,
• Positive Politeness,
• Negative Politeness, and
• Off-Record

 FRAME OF CONCEPT
The researcher summarizes and synthesizes all theories related to the research in order to answer
the two research questions.

• The first research question is ‘What politeness strategies are used by the main characters in
The Blind Side movie?” this research question will be solved using Brown and Levinson’s (1987)
politeness strategies theory. There are four strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson,
namely Balad On-Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record strategy.

• The second question is “What are the factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies
used by the main characters in The Blind Side movie?” The theory of Brown and Levinson
(1987) will also use in solving the second research question. Brown and Levinson (1987) state
that there are two factor are likely influence the application of the politeness strategies. The
two factors are Payoffs and Sociological Variables.
In conducting the study, the researcher will do the
several steps in order to finish the analysis.

Form of Research
Since the research concerns with how people speak or modify their utterances in conversations,
the researcher conduct a qualitative research. It is concerned with qualitative research
since it aims to understand human behavior and the reason that govern such behavior as it is
(Denzin and Lincoln, 2005).
 Object of Research
The object of this research is The Blind Side movie in which the main
characters’ utterances will be taken as the data. In this movie, there are 48
characters, but the researcher only take four characters from the movie as the
research object. They are Leigh Anne Tuohy, Michael Oher, Sean Tuohy, and S.J.

Research Instrument
The research instrument is the researcher herself. It does not need to make
questionnaire because the object of this research are movie. The supporting
instruments that will be used in conducting the research are laptop, headset, and
note card
 Technique and Tool of Data Collection
The data for analysis will be collected from one movie: The Blind Side. The researcher will select
some utterances from the main characters in the movie that contain politeness strategies from
the movie video. The utterances will be used to analyze the research question. The utterance will
categorize based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies (1987).

Technique of Data Analysis

The researcher will gather all the main characters utterances that used politeness strategies
based on the movie video and observe how they try to deliver their messages to others and how
they respond to the conversation. The researcher will employ a table consisting four
classifications of politeness strategies and the factors influencing the characters’ politeness.
