Variables
There are two uses of a variable. To illustrate the first use,
consider asking …
Solution:
a. Are there numbers a and b with the property that
a2 + b2 = (a + b)2?
Solution:
b. Given any real number r, r2 is nonnegative.

Ordered Pair
18
In an ordered pair (a, b), a is called the first
component and b is called the second
component.
If the position of the components is changed,
then the ordered pair is changed, i.e., it
becomes (b, a) but (a, b) ≠ (b, a).
Note:
Ordered pair is not a set consisting of two
elements.
19
Equality of Ordered Pairs:
Two ordered pairs are equal if and only if the
corresponding first components are equal and
corresponding second components are equal.
Example:
Two ordered pairs (a, b) and (c, d) are equal if a
= c and b = d, i.e., (a, b) = (c, d). Find the
values of x and y, if (2x - 3, y + 1) = (x + 5, 7)

Quiz #1
A team of biologists performed an experiment to
determine the effectiveness of a chemical to
accelerate the growth of a specific bacterium. They
introduce 40 bacterial colonies into growth medium
and exactly two hours later the number of colonies
has grown to 200. If fact, the number of colonies
grows exponentially for the first 5 hours of the
experiment. Calculate the number of colonies that
were present 5 hours after the experiment began.

Quiz #2
A hazardous material was found to
decay at a rate proportional to the
amount present. Initially, there were 50
mg of this radioactive material that was
present. After two hours, it has lost
10% of its original amount. Find the
mass of the material after four hours.

Quiz #3
Given the Fibonacci series,
3+5+8+13+…+55. Find the sum of this
series.
