Shaft Coupling

O A shaft coupling is a device used to connect

two shafts together at their ends for the
purpose of transmitting power.

O The primary purpose of couplings is to join

two pieces of rotating equipment while
permitting some degree of misalignment or
end movement or both.
 Rigid coupling
O The rigid couplings doesn’t allow
misalignment between shaft.

O They are used where the shaft of one

machine supports and position of the shaft
of another machine.
Types of Rigid Coupling
Setscrew - is a type of coupling generally used to
secure the shaft within or another shaft.

give a positive drive connection.
Clamp Couplings – this kind of couplings used to
clamp the two shafts together, while it is fastened
by screw and a nut.
 Flexible Coupling

O Flexible couplings are capable in

transmitting torque from one shaft to
another even though the shafts are
experiencing certain misalignments.
Types of Flexible Coupling
Jaw Coupling – compose of two metallic hubs and
an elastomer element between the hubs, which
press fitted together by jaws of the hubs and
interlock torsionally.
Flexible Disk Coupling – torque is transmitted
between the bolts through a series of thin, stainless
steel discs assembled in a pack.
Gear spindle Coupling – primarily used where large
torques need to be submitted in conjunction with
the smallest external diameters and a high
misalignment compensation capability is
simultaneously required.
Helical and Bellows Coupling – A form of flexible
coupling with twin coupling ends called hubs
capping a precision-engineered corrugated tube
that serves as the coupling body. Bellows couplings
are known for their exceptional rigidity to
accurately transmit velocity, angular position, and
torque.
