MARE 201A

AUXILIARY MACHINERY 1

E/C. LAURENCE JAMES M. CABANADO

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to be able to:

• Explain the necessity for a relief valve to be fitted in the

discharge of any displacement pump.
• States that when a pump is handling oil or other hazardous
material any discharge from the relief valve must be contained
within the pumping system.
• Describe with the aid of diagrams, how a reciprocating
displacement pump works.
• Explain the purpose of an air vessel fitted to the discharge.
ILO 1: Explain the necessity for a relief valve to be fitted in the
discharge of any displacement pump.

• A relief or safety valve on the discharge side of the pump is

therefore absolute necessary.
• The relief valve can be internal or external.
• The pump manufacturer has normally the option to supply
internal relief or safety valves.
• The internal valve should in general only be used as a safety
precaution, an external relief valve installed in the discharge line
with a return line back to the suction line or supply tank is
recommended.
ILO 2: States that when a pump is handling oil or other
hazardous material any discharge from the relief valve must be
contained within the pumping system.

• A major drawback is that an internal relief valve does not dissipate

heat. Even if the pump comes equipped with an internal relief valve, it
is strongly recommended that an external relief valve also be used
when handling hazardous liquids.
• An external relief device should be located as close as possible to the
pump discharge nozzle and before any block valve.
ILO 3: Describe with the aid of diagrams, how a reciprocating
displacement pump works.

Reciprocating Pump
• Hydraulic machine which converts the mechanical energy into
hydraulic energy.
ILO 4: Explain the purpose of an air vessel fitted to the discharge.

Purpose of an air vessel fitted to the discharge

• To obtain liquid at uniform discharge.
• Due to air vessel frictional head and acceleration head decreases and
the work overcoming friction resistance in suction and delivery pipe
considerably decreases which results in good amount of work.
