Quality of Service (QoS)
 QoS allows you to control traffic on your network.

 Control could either mean to limit the traffic or it can mean to prioritize or
reserve bandwidth for traffic. c

 The QoS mechanism we will take a look at are:

• Policing
• Shaping
• Bandwidth Reservation
• Prioritization
Policing
 Allows you to set an upper limit on a link that you would like to conserve bandwidth.

 When you Police a type of traffic, any traffic exceeding the limit is dropped even if there is
bandwidth available. c

 Policing is configured using a 3 step process. The 3 steps are:

• Classify the traffic that you would like to police. This could be done by using an ACL.
• Specify the action for the classified traffic as Policing and set an upper limit.
• Apply the policy to the Interface.

 Policing can be done Inbound or Outbound. Preferred to be done outbound as it prevents

the traffic consuming the precious bandwidth.
Shaping
 Shaping also sets an upper limit on the transmissions.

 The difference between Policing and shaping is that Shaping buffers traffic above the
configured rate whereas Policing would drop it.
c
 Dropping traffic can cause extra slowness in the network because the sending device has
to wait for retransmit message and then re-transmit the packet.

 As Shaping causes the router to buffer the traffic, it leads to higher Router utilization.

 Shaping will result in better overall network performance.

Bandwidth Reservation
 It allows you the ability to set aside [Reserve] bandwidth for specified traffic.

 It will allow the specified traffic to exceed the limit as long as there is available
bandwidth. c
 At a minimum, the specified traffic will have the amount you have specified.

 Uses the same mechanism to implement it on the routers.

 Although it reserves the specified bandwidth for the specified traffic, the traffic will be
emptied out based on the Interface FIFO strategy. It does not put the classified traffic
at the top of the queue.

 This type of policy can only be done outbound.

Prioritizing
 It allows you the ability to not only set aside [Reserve] bandwidth for
specified traffic, it also prioritizes the traffic and puts it at the top of the
queue. c
 It will allow the specified traffic to exceed the limit as long as there is
available bandwidth.

 At a minimum, the specified traffic will have the amount you have specified.

 Uses the same mechanism to implement it on the routers.

 This type of policy can only be done outbound.
