The Positive Impacts in Concurring Academic Life and Senior
Scouting of Students in Dr. Arcadio Santos National High School
Introduction

Different social institutions are prominent to guide an

individual grow according to his behest. One of the most important
institution is education. Education is a process of learning to acquire
knowledge. This process is implemented through academic and
extracurricular activities. It is one of the main focus a high school
student encounters during this stage of his life.
A healthy balance of academics and extracurricular activities
is key to a successful experience. (Gil, 2015) These activities help the
students to develop in different aspect of their lives and
personalities. However, imbalances cause poor performance to a
student. So, it is really important for the student to handle this
activities carefully, in line with his capabilities and in turn, maximize
his own potentials to get the most out of academic and
extracurricular learning.
This research focus on the journey of academic and
extracurricular life of BSP members in Dr. Arcadio Santos National
High School. As a worldwide brotherhood, Scouting is unique. It is
based on the principles of loving and serving God, of human
dignity and the rights of individuals, and of recognizing the
obligation of members to develop and use their potential. (Boy
Scouts of, 2015). Through the scouting principles and the
learnings they gain in challenging activities, students are expected
for development.
Although academic and scouting life is a tough pursuit for
students in DASNHS, concurring it results to positive impacts such
as it gives them a determination of connection to school matters,
injects them moral values and principles and helps them to strive
for greater academic achievement.

Survey Results
Total respondents: 33 Students
Part 1: Engaging with activities
1. Do you always think about the risk of your safety when joining
indoor/outdoor activities of BSP?
paaralan?)

20 out of 33 students answered that they have concerns about the risks of safety
when joining indoor or outdoor school activities. This merely shows that even
though they expect a great care in school authorities, they are aware of the
menaces they might experience in joining physical activities, especially outside the
school. By carefully thinking about the possible risks, they are willing to comply
with safety precautions and measures in order to prevent accidents that may
interfere with their safety.
2. I can handle my responsibilities properly both in BSP and
academic performance.

24/33 students answered the question positively, which means

that performing academic activities while joining organizations
like BSP is a matter that they can handle rigorously. Through the
trainings they have in schooling, the students are immune how to
handle both academic and extra-curricular premises. A high
school student thinks these are both his responsibility because he
feels the connection of being part in the domain.
3. I do gain a lot of insights and learnings after joining
a specific BSP activity. (Marami akong natututunang
bagay tuwing sumasali sa aktibidad sa BSP.)

27/33 respondents agreed that they had gained insights and

learnings from a specific activity they had join. This is an
evident that the activities that they had joined in was
productively and enthusiastically designed for student’s
development. Through this notion, it is possible that more
students are encouraged to join the upcoming activities in
anticipation for the new outcomes they might learn from it.
4. I am willing to pay the amount needed for certain
activities for food, registration and such. (Kusang loob

A total of 27 respondents in “strongly agree and agree”

category edifies that most of the students can pay financially
for the amount needed in their activities. They are aware that
these accounts are needed to suffice the needs in making the
activities successful.
5. Do you think your parents will still allow you to join
BSP activities even WITHOUT a parental consent?
Consent?)

14 students answered that their parents will not allow them to join
in BSP activities due to the inefficiency of security issues. Parental
consent is really important because the participants are not in the
legal age yet, they will need a lot of guidance. This consent will
verify that the parents agreed to the terms provided in the specific
activity. Other 10 remained neutral for such reasons that they were
not quite sure about their parent’s reactions.
6. BSP activities do not bring excitements and thrill for
me.

22 students disagreed upon this statement. It seemed that a lot of

them feel the thrills and excitement before, during and after the
activities in BSP. In acting such behaviors, students have a lot of
expectations before going in a certain activity. It can be concluded
that these 22 respondents were challenged in different aspects of
their character during the activities and had a lot of learning
outcomesafter it.
7. Budget is really important to be used prolifically because it
is the basis of resources in a successful activity.
aktibidad.)

23/33 respondents settled to the point that the budget

for the activities, that comes from their fees and
voluntary donations must be used worthy for the
resources needed. At this age, they are properly informed
on the significance of proper allocation of the budget for
it will be a key for an organized event and in turn, a
successful one.
8. My class schedule conflicts with the activities in
BSP.

12/33 students remained neutral with this discourse. This means

that they can accommodate their time with class schedules and
BSP activities in a likely manner. However, almost one third of the
respondents answered that there were times that the schedule is
in conflict. It can be implied that due to the shifting policy of the
school, scouts from different levels were having a hard time
putting up a meeting together.
9. I think engaging in BSP activities makes me a
productive person. (Sa tingin ko ay tinutulungan ako ng
mga sinasalihan kong aktibidad na maging
produktibong tao.)

27/33 students positively agreed that BSP activities makes them a

productive person. Because of the struggles, challenges and
experiences they faced during the activities, they had been taught
to use their time wisely in order to get the most out of the activity.
In this sense, many of the respondents believed that through the
engagement in the activities, the characteristic of being productive
has been attached to them to the extent that they can apply it to
their daily norms.
10. Do you think BSP in DASNHS is financially stable to
conduct activities?

22/33 students believed that BSP organization in Dr. Arcadio

Santos National High School can conduct
the activities without considering financial stability issue too
much. The needs and resources for the activities is well managed,
organized and provided. Students, Alumni Scouts and School
Authorities unite and help each other in order to execute the
events properly.
Part II: Embedding moral values
1. Does BSP teach you to be a disciplined person and mold
you to be a student with good moral character? Yes or
no? WHY?
Oo o Hindi? BAKIT?)

The respondents mostly answered yes. For them, BSP is an

organization that sets the good example to follow and fight
for what is right. BSP sets challenging activities and
responsibilities to its members in accordance in its mission
and vision. The students said that the discipline are taught
from the guidance of their Outfit Advisers. And through the
activities they are engaged with, they are developed to be
courageous, mature and responsible individuals.
2. How does Senior Scouting improve your
leadership skills? (Paano nakakatulong ang
Senior Scouting na mapaunlad ang iyong
kakayahan sa pamumuno?)
BSP trains students on how to become an effective leader
and acquire the characteristics of being one. By their
decision to join in this organization, their confidence and
inner strength are boosted up. BSP hone the members to
have a sharp mind and be nifty in the way they look when
handling physical and mental activities. They are aware
of the concerns among other members, increasing their
brotherhood/sisterhood attitude towards each other.
Through this, Senior Scouting give the students the
chance to enhance their leadership skills to the fullest.
3. What moral value BSP has imbibed to you that can actually
contribute to your future life?
kinabukasan?)
According to the students who answered the survey, they had been
imbibed with several moral values from the various experiences
they handled in the organization. These includes:
•being ready
•having confidence
•being nationalistic
•increase their social capacities
•being respectful
•to be friendly and cheerful
•being stable in the hardships of life
•to help without asking for replacement
•being alert
•to value oneself and others
Part III: Female Senior Scouts = =
1. Why do you think females are engaged to
join in BSP? (Bakit sa tingin mo ay
maraming babae ang sumasali sa BSP?)
Most of the female scouts joined BSP because they wanted
to raise the power of women. Female members are
adventurous and potent in proving that girls can also do
what the boys can. For them, BSP is the most exciting
organization in the school and girls try to push their
potentials at a different level. Boys and girls must be
treated equal and in BSP, they are privilege to have this
right.
2. How do girls cope up with the activities in
BSP? (Paano nakakasabay ang mga babae sa mga
gawain sa BSP?)

Female scouts can cope up easily with the activities in

BSP and sometimes, they surpass what male scouts can
do. According to them, this is made possible because they
follow the tasks and rules whole heartedly. They believe
in their potentials and because of this, they earn respect
from their fellow male members. They also answered that
they are a good listener, thrifty, smart and critical
thinker. They cope up by proving that girls are not really
weak in conquering this kind of quests.
3. (FOR FEMALES ONLY) what urged you to join
in BSP? (Bakit ka sumali sa BSP?)

Many of the female scouts answered that they

urged to join in BSP because of curiosity, they
wanted to have a new endeavours and experiences
in life. But according to them, as they go along,
female scouts felt the attachment and started to
love what they are doing. They maximize their
potentials and learned a lot of values & skills that
they never thought they can gain.
Conclusion

Based on the experiences of DASNHS students, it

can be concluded that they gained positive impacts
through academic life and extracurricular activities.
Academic life gives them the chance to acquire
theoretical and applied knowledge in different genres of
learnings. In scouting, they have been provided the
opportunity to try new things, provide service to others,
build self-confidence, and reinforce ethical standards.
These opportunities not only help them when they are
young but also carry forward into their adult lives,
improving their relationships, their work lives, their
family lives, and the values by which they live.
One positive resultsof concurring academic
and scouting life is it gives them the
determination to connect with school matters.
John Mahoney and Robert Cairns (1997)
indicated that engagement in school
extracurricular activities is linked to decreasing
rates of early school dropouts in both boys and
girls. They discovered that such participation
provides marginal students an opportunity to
create a positive and voluntary connection to
their school.
Secondly, concurring both academic and scouting
life helps them to be injected with moral values and
principles. Herbert Marsh (1992) compared predicted
outcomes for students who did not participate in
extracurricular activities with those of students who
were moderately active. He concluded that the effects of
participation on social and academic self-concepts are
significant. Evidently, participation in extracurricular
activities, even those not obviously associated with
academic achievement, leads to increased commitment
to school and school values and the moral principles a
particular organization upholds.
Lastly, when a high school student concur
academic and scouting life, they tend to strive for
greater academic achievement. Susan Gerber
(1996) also found that extracurricular
participation is not detrimental to student
performance and that participation in these
types of activities promotes greater academic
achievement. In addition, she discovered that
participation in school-related activities was
more strongly associated with achievement than
was participation in activities outside of school.
