13-19 YEARS
ADOLESCENCE
■ Adolescence comes from the Latin word
‘adolescere’ which means- to grow
■ Crucial stage between childhood and
adulthood
■ Period of storms and stresses
■ Begins at puberty
ADOLESCENCE
■ Early adolescence – rapid physical and
intellectual development

■ Middle adolescence- adjustment to the


changes of early adolescence

■ Later adolescence- responsibilities, choices


and opportunities of adulthood
Physical Development
Height-
■ rapid increase due to increased production
of hormones
■ Girls mature early and grow rapidly than
boys during early adolescence
■ Boys grow during middle adolescences
■ During later adolescence, both boys and
girls grow but at a slower rate

■ Puberty is a series of physiological changes
that render the immature organism
capable of reproduction
■ Development of primary and secondary
sexual characteristics
■ Onset of puberty is earlier in girls

■ Appearance of pubic hair
■ Appearance of hair under armpit
■ Increased activation of sweat glands
■ Development of breasts
■ Rounding of pelvis due to fusion of bones

■ Deal with the ideas which do not involve them
personally
■ Use logical reasoning to reach to the facts
■ Specific interests
■ High imagination ( fantasy, daydreaming)
■ Becomes aware of his limitations in thinking
Emotional Development
■ Period of heightened emotionality
■ Want to live independently but are dependent on
adults
■ Sensitive to rejection
■ Increase in concentration and self control
■ More attached to peers
■ Influence of role models
■ Conscious about themselves
■ Development of self concept and self esteem
Emotional Development
■ A stormy period- period of conflicts
Lot of emotional instability due to rapid
physical growth and sudden changes in the
body
■ Period of fear and anxiety
Because of unexpressed fears and feeling of
guilt due to bodily changes
Social Development
■ Peer group becomes important
■ Hero-worship
■ Need for status- adulthood
■ Need independence
■ A period of storm and stress
■ Generation gap
Education during Adolescence
■ Helped in making adjustments with sudden
physiological changes
■ Given independence in the ways of studying
■ Act like a friend
■ Helped to stabilize emotions and emotions
should be properly trained and diverted
towards constructive ends

according to their interests and aptitude
