CLIMATE CHANGE
Trends, Networks, and Critical
Thinking in the 21st Century
Climate Change
- Is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns
when change last for an extended period of time.
- May refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in
the time variation of weather within the context of longer
term.
Climate
- The average weather in a particular place.
- It includes precipitation, temperature, humidity, and
seasons.
Global Warming
-caused by on going rise in global average temperature near
earth’s surface, due to an increasing concentration of
greenhouse gasses in the athmosphere.
Causes of Climate Change
1. Water Vapour (H20)
- Is considered as the most abundant greenhouse gas.
2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
- Is the principal greenhouse gas that contributes to climate
change. It is released through natural processes.
3. Methane (CH4)
- Is a hydrocarbon gas produced by natural sources and
human activities which includes the decomposition of
waste.
4. Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
- Are used as coolants, foaming agents, fire extinguisher,
solvents, pesticides, and aerosol propellants.
Effects of Climate Change
Some of the Long-Term effects of Global Climate change
Include the following:
1. Rise in temperature
2. Changes in the pattern of precipitation
3. Droughts and heat waves intensity
4. Strength and intensity of Typhoons and Hurricanes will
increase
5. Rise of sea level by one to four feet by 2100
6. Shrinking ice sheets
7. Ocean Acidification
 Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture
-changes in temperature, amount of carbon dioxide (CO2),
and the frequency and intensity of extreme weather could
have significant impacts on crop yield.
*Impacts on Livestock
*Impacts on Fisheries
*Risk of species extinction due to climate
change
*Impacts on water supply and quality
*Impacts on Human Health
1. Sustained rise in temperatures can lead to frequent and
severe heat stress.
2. Reduction in air quality
3. Supply of agricultural products
4. Spread of infectious diseases.
5. Mosquito related diseases
6. People who live in low income countries are vulnerable.

*Impacts of Climate Change in the Philippines

1. El Nino phenomenon will intensify
2. The sea surface temperature will rise
3. Ocean Acidification
4. Sea levels will rise by 4 to 6 meters
5. Tropical cyclones will intensify
6. Rainfall, river flow, and flooding will intensify
*Impacts of Climate Change in Africa
1. It is projected by the year 2050, about 350 to 600 million
people are expected to experience water stress due to
climate change.
2. Projected to affect production, including access to food in
many African countries and regions.
3. By the end of the 21st century, sea level rise projection is
expected to affect low-lying coastal areas that we have
large populations.
4. Can affect human health.

*Impacts of Climate Change in Asia

1. Melting of glaciers can increase the risk of flooding and rock
avalanche
Addressing Climate Change Problems
Mitigation Approach
- It refers to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases
and the stabilization of the levels of heat trapping
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Adaptation Approach
- Refers to the ability of humans to adapt to the effects of
climate change that we are now experiencing.

What can we do to help address Climate Change?

• At Home
1. Change Light bulbs
2. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
What can we do to help address Climate Change?
• At Home (Continuation)
3. Use water efficiently
4. Practice Composting

• At the Office
1. Manage your office equipment energy wisely
2. Learn to commute
3. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

• On the Road
1. Buy a fuel efficient and low greenhouse gas vehicle
2. Drive smart
3. Ensure proper car maintenance
4. Check tires regularly
5. Use renewable fuels
