WAYANG KULIT
 Shadow puppetry is famous in Indonesia. Wayang,
in modern Indonesian language means “show” or
“perform”. Kulit means “skin”, a reference to the
leather material that the figures are carved out of.
Others say that wayang is also attributed to the
Indonesian wor bayang which means “shadow”.
Wayang Kulit is a type
of puppet shadow play
performed aroun the
Indo-Malayan
archipelago, tracing its
origins to India. It is
derived from a
Javanese Hindu-
Buddhist tradition,
where hand-crafted
leather puppets depict
epic stories of the gods
in shadow play. A
traitional gamelan
orchestra would
accompany the story
telling.
THE PERFORMANCE OF WAYANG
KULIT
 The puppets are moved behind a cotton or linen
screen by a dalang, or a “puppet master” in
shadow puppet play. The dalang tells the story,
interprets and voices each character, producing
sound effects with speech and movement and
manipulates all the figures between the lamp and
the screen to bring the shadows to life.

 Is a various artistic expression and artwork of the
archipelagic nation of Indonesia.
 It is either work of arts produce by it’s people
created by indonesian artist or influenced by it’s
culture and tradition.
 From prehistoric cave paintings and megalithic
ancestral statues of central Sulawesi, tribal wooden
carving traitions of Toraja, an asmat people,
graceful Hindu-buddhist.

 Art of classical javanee civilization which produced
Borobudur and Prambanan, vivid Balinese paintings
and performing arts, Islamic arts of Aceh, to
contemporary art of modern Indonesian artists.
 Both Indoneian diversity and history add to
complexity on defining an identifying what is
Indonesian art.
 Prehistoric cave paintings were discovered in
numbers of sites in Indonesia.
Indonesian Arts
 The notable ones are those in cave of Maros
Regency in South Sulawesi, also in Sangkulirang-
Mengkalihat karst of formation in East Kalimantan.
 The cave painting was etimated dated from circa
ten thousand BC.
 The art of painting is quiet well-developed in Bali,
where its people are famed for their artistry. The
Balinese art paintings tradition started as classical
Kamasan or Wayang style visual narrative.
Indonesian Arts
 Balinese painting tradition are notable for its highly
vigorous yet refined intricrate art which tropical
themes.
 Ubud and Buthuan in Bali are well-known for their
paintings.

Sculpture
 Megalithic sculpture has been discovered in several
sites in Indonesia.
 Between 8th to 15th century, javanese civilization ha
developed a refined stone sculpting art and
architecture which was influenced by Hindu-Buddhist
Dharmic Civilization.
 The art of wood carving is quite well-developed in
Indonesia.
