 FIRST GENERATION.

 SECOND GENERATION.

 THIRD GENERATION.

 FOURTH GENERATION.

 FIFTH GENERATION.
1] First Generation - 1940-1956: Vacuum
Tubes :
 The first computers used vacuum tubes for
circuitry and magnetic drums for memory,
and were often enormous, taking up entire
rooms.
 The inputs were given through punch
cards or paper tapes.
 First-generation computers cost about $1
million each to build.
 Thus, first generation computers were not
affordable by all.

2] Second Generation: 1956-1963: TRANSISTORS :
Transistors replaced vacuum tubes and ushered
in the second generation computer.
 This generation computer was much efficient
and reliable then the first generation computers.
 The size of the second generation computers
was smaller compared to first generation
computers.
 The price was comparatively less than the first
generation computer.

3] Third Generation - 1964-1971: Integrated
Circuits
The development of the integrated circuit was the
hallmark of the third generation of computers.
 The third generation computers replaced the
transistors with IC’s[INTEGRATED CIRCUIT] which
were made with small crystal silicon chips called
semi-conductor.
 The speed and efficiency were increased.
 Inputs were given through keyboards and outputs
were displayed on the monitors.
 Similarly, the cost as well as the size of the 3rd
generation computers were reduced

4] Fourth Generation - 1971-Present:
Microprocessors
The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of
computers, as thousands of integrated circuits we
rebuilt onto a single silicon chip.
 This generation computer has a very high processing
speed , high reliability as well as low power
consumption.
 The size and cost of such computers are low compared
to the previous three generations.
 Examples such as laptops, tablets ,etc. belong to the
fourth generation.

5] Fifth Generation - Present and Beyond:
Artificial Intelligence
 Fifth generation computing devices, based on artificial
intelligence, are still in development , though there are
some applications, such as voice recognition, that are
being used today.
 They deal with expert systems and robotics.
 The fifth generation computer are still being
developed.
 Robotics is an integral example for the fifth generation
system as it is the future.
 The main aim to understand the natural language of a
human.
 Programming computers to play games such as chess.
