Physical and Motor

Development
-Potbelly tightens due to the development of
abdominal muscles.

-Trunks, arms and legs grow longer but the head


is relatively large.

- Most boys this age, is a little taller and heavier


and has more muscle per pound of body weight,
whereas most girls has more fatty tissues,

- Both boys and girls typically grow 2-3 inches a


year and gain 4-6 pounds.
- muscular and skeletal growth progresses,
cartilage turns to bones at a faster rate that
before and bones become harder and stronger,
giving the child a firm shape and protecting the
internal organs

- Wide range of motor skills develop; increased


capacities of the respiratory and circulatory
systems build physical stamina.
Nutrition and Oral Health
- Preschoolers eat less in proportion to their size
than infants do.

- Children vary in their ability to recognize their


internal cues of hunger and fullness, and parents’
eating habits have an influence.

- Most 3 year-olds will eat only until they are full


while 5 year old tend to eat more when larger
portion is put in front of them.

Sleep Patterns and Problems

four years engage in bedtime struggles lasting
more than an hour and wake their parents
frequently at night.

- Walking and talking during sleep are fairly


common in early childhood.

accidental activation of the brains’ motor control
system.
