ANSWERS:
- Because a 'mile' exists between the two S's.
While that is a good answer to the riddle, the actual
longest English word is
'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis' -
the meaning of which is a lung disease, that is caused
due to inhalation of very fine silica particles, which
turn cause inflammation of the lungs.
The other long English word is
'floccinaucinihilipilification'- which means to describe
something as worthless, or turning something into
being worthless by deprecating it.
LET’S EXPLORE!

You went to your favorite school supplies store

and used your Php50.00-off coupon. Then, you
went to your favorite shoe store and used your
20%-off coupon.
LET’S EXPLORE!
QUESTION:
1. What is the function for the total amount you spent given
that you bought items that regularly cost Php200 at each
store?
2. What if you have two coupons for your favorite clothing
store: one that is 30% discount and another one is that is
Php60 off. If the store allows you to use both of the coupons
in any order, which do you think give you the better deal if
the shirt you want to buy costs Php500?
LET’S EXPLORE!
First, we must formulate two functions: one for the school supply
store and the other for shoe store.
Amount spent in the school supply store : f(x) = x - 50
Amount spent in the shoe store : g(x) = 0.80x
1. Separately evaluate the two functions then add the results.
2. Add the two functions to formulate new function and then
evaluate.
SOLUTIONS
• 1. School supply store : f(x) = x – 50 with regular
cost of Php200
f(200) – 50 = 150

• This means that the amount spent for the school

supplies is Php150 only.
SOLUTIONS
• 1. Shoe store: g(x) = 0.80x with regular cost of
Php200
g(200) = 0.80(200) = 160

• This means that the amount spent for the shoe is

Php160 only.
SOLUTIONS
Total amount spent in the two stores is
Php150 + Php160 = Php310

2. f(x) + g(x) = (x-50) + (0.80x) = 1.80x-50

f(200) + g(200) = 1.80(200) – 50 = 310
