Thrust
• Consider a basic gas turbine moving through
the atmosphere with an inlet velocity of Va
and an exit velocity of Vj. Mass flow of air
through the engine is m .
Momentum Thrust
From Newton’s Second Law
Force = Mass x Acceleration
But Thrust is a Force
Thrust = Mass x Acceleration
V j Va
Thrust mass x
t

Thrust xV j Va
t
Thrust m x( V j Va )
Units are Newtons or lbf
This type of thrust is known as Momentum Thrust
Choked Nozzle Thrust or
Pressure Thrust
If the air speed at the exit nozzle reaches Mach 1
the speed of sound a shock wave will form and
the nozzle is said to be choked.
As a result the pressure in the jet pipe (P) will
increase and when it gets above 1.4:1 compared
to ambient pressure (Pa) then significant pressure
thrust begins to be produced.
Engines designed for commercial passenger
aircraft have the exit nozzle is only just at Mach 1
hence pressure thrust is negligible for these types
Choked Nozzle Thrust or
Pressure Thrust
• To fully exploit pressure thrust and the choked nozzle concept
a convergent /divergent nozzle is required. For military
applications and rockets with convergent/divergent exit
nozzles pressure thrust becomes more significant .
Pr essure Thrust Aj x ( Pj Pa )
Shaft Horsepower
As in reciprocating engines the gas generator of a turbo-prop
engine is used to drive a propeller. The propeller develops the
thrust which can drives the airplane.
To measure the power that is developed one needs to devise
a system that can monitor the turning force on the propeller
shaft

Power Measurement in Turboprop Aircraft
Brake Horsepower
• To measure shaft horsepower it is usual to use
a brake dynamometer. Hence, Shaft
Horsepower is sometimes known as Brake
Horsepower. Numerically it is the same .

Propulsive Efficiency Graphs
Hitunglah Net Thrust dan thrust horse power yang dihasilkan dari mesin turbojet
dengan spesifikasi sebagai berikut :
Berat aliran udara yang melewati engine (Wa ) = 85 lb/s
Airspeed (V1) = 325 mph (476 ft/s)
Area jet Nozzle Velocity (V2) = 1475 ft/s
Pressure jet nozzle P2 = 76 in Hg (37,33 psi)
Ambient pressure (Pamb) = 28,75 in Hg (14,12 psi)
Fuel flow = 5250 lb/hr (1,46 lb/s)
Equivalent Shaft Horsepower
• Under static conditions, one shaft horsepower is equal to
approximately 2.5 pounds of thrust. The formula for ESHP is:
Fn
• ESHP (static) = ESHP(static) SHP
2.5
• In flight, the ESHP considers the thrust produced by the
propeller, which is found by multiplying the net thrust in
pounds by the speed of the aircraft in miles per hour. Divide
this by 375 times the propeller efficiency, which is considered
to be 80%.
Fn . V
• ESHP (flight) = SHP 375.
• Tentukan ESHP yang dihasilkan dari pesawat terbang dengan
menggunakan mesin turboprop dengan spesifikasi :
• Airspeed = 260 mph ; shaft horsepower indicated on the
cockpit indicator 525 SHP; Net Thrust 195 Pounds
