Globalization in the Music

Industry
Pre-finals
Globalization
Is the process by which businesses or other organizations
develop international influence or start operating on an international
scale; an interaction and integration among people, companies, and
governments worldwide.
Pros of Globalization
• There is now a worldwide market for companies and consumers who
have access to products of different countries; wide selection.
• Represents free trade, which promotes global economic growth;
creates jobs, makes companies more competitive, and lowers prices
for consumers.
• Competition between countries is supposed to drive prices down. (In
many cases this is not working because countries manipulate their currency to get
a price advantage.)
• There is cultural intermingling and each country is learning more
about other cultures.
Cons of Globalization
• it has made the rich richer while making the non-rich poorer. “It is
wonderful for managers, owners and investors, but hell on workers
and nature.”
• Building products overseas in countries like China puts our
technologies at risk of being copied or stolen, which is in fact
happening rapidly.
• Globalization has led to exploitation of labor. Prisoners and child
workers are used to work in inhumane conditions. Safety standards
are ignored to produce cheap goods. There is also an increase in
human trafficking.
Globalization in Music
It has become a tool to share culture, thoughts, and stories
throughout the world. In the past, only richer countries (e.g. United
States and U.K.) are able to distribute their music around the world.

Now, with the internet and other forms of technology, people

can share music all across the world with few limitations.
Why is Globalization Great for Music?
It helps with the slightly effortless disbursement of music across
different countries.

With today’s technology in streaming and downloading, artists aren’t

restricted by having the government of other countries looking at
music to see if the artist’s music needs to be censored or banned.

Artists can find success in other countries without having success in

their own home.
How Advancement in Tech/Apps Helped Music
Globalization

• Streaming devices (phones, computers, mp3 players)

• Streaming apps (Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Youtube, Soundcloud)
• Live streams (in Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, Periscope)
Streaming Devices
Through these, we can now listen to music from all over the
world without having to buy physical discs. These also gives a wider
audience for the different music of different artists.
Streaming Apps
Everybody loves music streaming services; they provide free and
frictionless access to any music whenever and wherever we want to
listen to it. For the past few years, streaming services have seen steady
growth and, according to Statista, streaming services are the most
profitable digital music format in the US.

On the battlefield of music streaming domination are Amazon

Prime Music, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Deezer, Pandora,
SoundCloud, Tidal and many others (Yalantis, 2019).
Live Streaming
With live streaming, artists can have concerts live on Facebook or
on any website so that their fans who cannot make it to the concert or
afford tickets will still be able to view them perform live.

The best part is that this is for free, and that fans from all over
the world can have the privilege of supporting their idols no matter
where they are.
What if Globalization Never Happened ?
If we were to look at what would happen to music in this day and
age without the possibility of globalization, music wouldn’t be nearly as
profitable. The music industry would plummet because only few people
would make the effort and buy CDs/physical records. In a huge way,
globalization made the music industry as big as it is today.
Conclusion
Globalization for the music industry allows for people to hear
music from all around the world using many different devices. It also
allows for artists to put music in countries they wouldn’t have been
able to 10 years ago. The music industry is at its highest profit right
now from constantly watching the uproar in new music apps and
technology.
