What are parallels and perpendiculars?
Parallels
o never intersect
o have the same slope
o Different y-intercepts

Perpendiculars
o intersect at 90-degree angles
o have slopes that are negative reciprocals
Parallel
Lines
Perpendicular
Lines
One line passes through points (-3,14) and (1,-2); another line passes through
points (0,3) and (-2,5).

m1 = -2-14 = -16 = -4
1-(-3)= 4

m2 = 5-(-3) = 8 = -4
-2-0 = -2
One line passes through the points (3,3) and (-6,-3); another line passes through
the points (2,-8) and (-6,4).

m1 = 3-(-3) = 6 = 2
3-(-6) 9 3

m2 = -8-4 = -12 = -3
2-(-6) 8 2
Give an equation of a line that is parallel to y = 5x – 3 .

y = 5x + 1, y = 5x – 3, y = 5x – 1.5

1
What is the equation of the line that is perpendicular to y = - x – 3 ?
2
