LITERATURE

Cavite
• Historical Capital of the Philippines
• Established on March 10, 1614
• Languages- Tagalog and Chavacano
• It became the cradle of the Philippine Revolution, which led to the
renouncement of Spanish Colonial Control, finally culminating in the
Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1818 on Kawit, Cavite.
Literature
• means a single body of written frameworks.
• It originated from Latin word literatura (litteratura) which means letter or
handwriting.
• It is categorized into many forms like Fiction/Non-fiction, Poetry/Prose,
Novel, Short-story, Drama.

Efren Abueg
Efren Abueg
• March 3, 1937
• A well-known and recognized Filipino-language creative writer, editor,
author, novelist, short story writer, essayist, fictionist, professor, textbook
writer, and anthologist in the Philippines.
• Tanza, Cavite
• His works appeared on magazines such as Liwayway, Bulaklak, Tagumpay,
Mod, and Homelife.
Education
He attended Naic Elementary School in Naic, Cavite in 1950. In 1954, he finished
high school at Arellano (Public) High School in Batangas]. He graduated in 1957
from Imus Institute Junior College in Imus, Cavite with an Associate In Arts
degree and graduated with the degree of Bachelor in Science in Commerce,
Major in Accounting in 1960 from Manuel L. Quezon University in Quiapo,
Manila. He got his Masters in Arts in Language and Literature degree at De La
Salle University in 1987 and his PhD in Filipino and Translation Studies at the
University of the Philippines Diliman in 2000.
Career
• As anthologist
• Abueg was the author of three anthologies of stories and essays. They are Bugso[1][2] ("Impetus"),
Tradisyon (Kasaysayan ng Panitikan ng Pilipinas: Mula Alamat hanggang Edsa) ["Tradition (History of
Literature of the Philippines: From Legend to Edsa"), and Ang Mangingisda: Mga Kuwento kay Jesus ["The
Fisherman: Stories on Jesus")

• As novelist
• Abueg authored the novels Dilim sa Umaga ("Darkness in the Morning"), Habagat sa Lupa ("Monsoon on
Land"), and Dugo sa Kayumangging Lupa ("Blood on Brown Land").[2] of Merah Tua, a novel cerealize in
Liwayway magazine. He was one of the resident writers at the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center
• As head of organizations
From 1984 to 1987, Abueg was the Director of the Student Publications Office of
De La Salle University.[2] From 1986 to 1988, Abueg was the president of the
Kapisanan ng mga Propesor sa Pilipino (KAPPIL) [literally "Organization of
Professors of the Filipino Language"), as well as the president of Linangan ng
Literatura ng Pilipinas (Literary League of the Philippines). He was also the director
of the Philippine Folklore Society.[1]
• As fictionist
• From 1998 to 1999, Abueg was a National Fellow for Fiction for the
LIKHAAN: UP Creative Writing Center
• As editor
• Among the books Abueg edited were Mga Piling Akda ng KADIPAN ["Selected
Works of KADIPAN"] (1964), Mga Agos sa Disyerto ["Currents in the Desert"]
(1965, 1974 and 1993), MANUNULAT: Mga Piling Akdang Pilipino
["WRITER: Selected Filipino Works"] (1970), and Parnasong Tagalog ni
Abadilla (1973).[1] He was the editor of Tulay na Buhangin at iba pang mga
akda ["Sand Bridge at other works"].[2]
Awards
• Novel writing
• Liwayway magazine awarded Abueg four literature prizes for his novels, such as in 1964, 1965, and 1967
• Short story writing
• Abueg had been a recipient of awards for his short stories. The recognition included six Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards,[2] namely in
1959, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1967, and 1974. In 1957, Abueg received the first prize for short story from KADIPAN. In 1969, he received the
Pang-alaalang Gawad Balagtas (Balagtas Memorial Award).[1][2] In 1969, the Philippines Free Press gave him a third prize for a Filipino-
language short story.[1][2] In 1992, Abueg won the Mangangatha sa Tagalog ("Composer in Tagalog") prize from the Unyon ng mga
Manunulat sa Pilipinas.[1]
• Essay writing
• For essay writing, Abueg received the first prize during the KADIPAN competition in 1958.[1]
• Textbook writing
• Abueg received awards for the textbooks he authored.
• Other awards
• The other awards Abueg received include the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas and the Gawad Quezon sa Panitikan.

Rojelio Ordoñez
• September 24, 1940 - May 19, 2016
• also known as “Ka Roger”
• a multi-awarded Filipino fiction writer, poet, activist, journalist and educator.
• was one of the authors of the iconic Tagalog literature anthology Mga Agos sa
Disyerto in the 1960s.
• was a contributor to Liwayway Magazine, Pilipino Free Press, Asia-Philippines
Leader, Pilosopong Tasyo, Diario Uno and Pinoy Weekly.

Early life and Education
• Ordoñez was born in Alapan, Imus, Cavite. He studied at Mapua Institute of Technology
and Manuel L. Quezon University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil
Engineering. Drawn to the Filipino literature that focused on the reality of life,especially
about the workers and peasants and the downtrodden or the oppressed, Ordoñez
concentrated in writing instead of practicing his degree. He wrote many fictions, most
notably short stories in Liwayway, columns and editorials in Pilipino Free Press as a staff
member, various articles in Asia-Philippines Leader also as a staff member, and poems,
short-stories and essays in literary journals. His first short story appeared in Liwayway
when he was still in high school. Keen in teaching and molding new-generation writers,
he took up his MA in Mass Communication at the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines.
Career
• Ordoñez worked under Nick Joaquin in the Asia-Philippines Leader for a short period
of time. He was the former Editor-in-Chief and former chairman of the Editorial
Board of the alternative newspaper Pinoy Weekly, a nationalist and progressive
newspaper in FILIPINO. Ordoñez has worked as secretary-general of the PUP's
Center for Creative Writing, professorial lecturer, and columnist. Sometime in 1995, he
served as the Director of Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations in Polytechnic
University of the Philippines and is a Professor in the Graduate School of same
institution; he also teaches Creative Writing, Literature, History, Works of Rizal,
Contemporary Social Problems and Pamamahayag sa Filipinolohiya in the
undergraduate programs, also in the said university.
