Biography (1877-1938)

• Allama Iqbal was born in Sialkot in 1877.
• Gained Masters degree from Government college in Lahore.
• Studied various subjects: philosophy, law and etc.
• He was also a poet, taking his inspiration from Holy Quran.
• In 1922, knighted by the British due to his poetry.
• He was also a politician, as in 1926 was elected to Punjab Assembly.
• In 1927, was appointed General Secretary of Muhammad Shafi
group.
• In December 1930 made the famous Allahabad Address(Discussed
in section 1.2)
• Died in 1938

• Allama Iqbal used his poetry to awaken Muslims of the
subcontinent to do work in order to improve their position in the
society.
• He gave the idea of establishing a separate Muslim state, and he
also opposed the British rule.
• He believed that in order to achieve the partition, the Muslim
needed to be a much more recognized party.
• In 1930, made a famous Allahabad Address calling for Muslims to
establish a separate Muslim state in which Muslims had political
autonomy.
• Muslim League adopted this idea 10 years later/ “Pakistan
Resolution” 1940

PART OF ALLAHABAD ADDRESS:
“European democracy cannot be applied to India without recognizing
the fact of communal groups. The Muslim demand for the creation of a
Muslim India within India is perfectly justified. I would like to see Punjab,
NWFP, Sindh and Baluchistan amalgamated into a single state….”
