The Ilongot
ILONGOT

 On the east side of Luzon in the Philippines,


The Ilongot, also known as Bugkalots, are well
known for their intense aggressiveness and
cultural conservatism.

 The Ilongot are a tribe who inhabit the


Southern Sierra Madre, mostly in Dupax,
Kasibu, and Caraballo Mountains, They also
inhabit the mountains in the headwaters of the
C a g a y a n , Ta b a y o n , a n d C o n w a p R i v e r s
Geographical Location

• Primarily in the
provinces of Nueva
Vizcaya and Nueva
Ecija and along the
mountain border
between the provinces
of Quirino and Aurora
ILONGOT
 T h e y g r o w m a i z e , m a n i o c , r i c e , t o b a c c o , s u g a r,
and vegetables.

 They hunt with dogs. Their meats are equally


shared among all household and consumed
i m m e d i a t e l y. M e a t i s s u n d r i e d , f i s h a r e t a k e n
with nets, traps, spears, and poisons. The
Ilongot also collect forest products for trading
and also for their brides.

 The Ilongot,, have five subgroups: Italon,


Engongot, Kadayakan, Abaca, and Dagkan.
ILONGOT
 Traditional Ilongot religion revolves around
helpful and dangerous supernatural beings.
Illnesses is believed to be caused by
supernatural beings who lick or urinate on their
victims. Shaman preside over curing
ceremonies, and spirits are kept away by
bathing, smoking and sweeping.

 The Ilongot are buried in a


sitting position. If a woman died in
childbirth or experienced a violent
Death, her hands tied to her feet to
prevent her "ghost" from roaming.

Appearances

 They were small and well built, but not


so well built as the tribes farther
north. The men were fully armed with
spears, bows and arrows, shields,
and head-knives; gee-strings apart,
they were naked. Some of them wore
on the head the scarlet beak of the
hornbill
