When we read the Bible with our Greek
mindset, we inevitably misinterpret it
because the human authors of the Scriptures
were Hebrews, not Greeks. The eternal,
inspired words of the Almighty are clothed in
a Semitic worldview, not the garb of the
Greek philosophers.
 “For years all the disciples of Yeshua were Jewish.
 The New Testament was entirely written by Jews.
 The very concept of a Messiah is nothing but Jewish.
 Finally, Yeshua himself was and still is Jewish - nowhere does
Scripture say or suggest that he has ceased to be a Jew.
 It was Jews who brought the Gospel to Gentiles.
 Sha'ul (Paul) , the chief emissary to the Gentiles was an
observant Jew all his life.
 Indeed the main issue in the early Church was whether without
undergoing complete conversion to Judaism a Gentile could be a
Christian at all.
 The Messiah's atonement is rooted in the Jewish
sacrificial system;
 the Lord's Supper is rooted in the Jewish Passover
traditions;
 baptism is a Jewish practice;
 and indeed the entire NT is built on the Hebrew Bible,
so that the NT without the TaNaK is as impossible as the
second floor of a house without the first.
 Thus although the Gospel message is for Jew and Gentile
equally, the context of Messianic faith is Jewish (or
Hebraic).”

HEBRAISM IDIOM IN THE NT – LOST IN TRANSLATION
Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently
affirmed saying, ‘Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is
a Galilean’. But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are
saying!’ And immediately, while he was still speaking, the
rooster (cock) crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.
And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said
to him, ‘Before the rooster (cock) crows, you will deny Me
three times. Then Peter went out and wept bitterly”. (Luke
22:56-62). -
As it turns out, the Hebrew word for rooster may not have
been “rooster” at all. The King James translates the word as
“cock,” which was a common word for rooster in King James’
day. But when the text is translated back into proper
Hebrew, according to some scholars, the word was not a
bird, but a man, specifically the priest who was in charge of
locking the Temple doors at night and then unlocking the
doors each morning just before dawn.
Hebraisms in John are the use of hyperbole (exaggeration) and the use of figurative
language, including metaphors.
Consider John 6:53 "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you shall not have
life within you".
• Clearly, Yeshua did not expect his disciples to be cannibals and eat his flesh and
drink his blood. Such practices were abhorred by religious Jews and the Torah
strictly forbids anyone from drinking blood (Lev 17:10-12) (because the ‘life’ of a
creature is in its blood and its ‘life’ belongs to God alone).
 So this statement was definitely figurative, but was also perhaps hyperbole
because Yeshua was trying to make the point that he wished the disciples
to share the ‘life’, the intimate relationship he shared with the Father.
 Yeshua wanted them to so fully embrace his way of living; his obedience
to Torah; that they were so close to him; so much in unity with him; that
his example and words become their ‘bread’ (main staple or source) of
Truth; or figuratively, as he had just stated that he was their ‘bread of life’ (John
6:48).
In John’s Gospel there are many of these metaphors:
• Yeshua called himself ‘the bread of life’ - John 6:48; ‘the light of the world’ -
John 8:12; ‘the door’ - John 10:9; ‘the true vine’ - John 15:1; and he referred
to his body as the Temple - John 2:19.
 Clearly these are metaphors and not to be taken literally.
 Yeshua never was an actual door, but rather he offers a means of entry into the
Kingdom of God.
 So when he contrasts himself with the manna (the bread that sustained the
Jewish people in the Sinai Desert), he is just further accentuating the metaphor
and using hyperbole to bring greater emphasis to his argument.
When you become aware of these metaphors in John, and then re-read this Gospel,
you should note that such figurative language and hyperbole is actually used quite
frequently.
When the Gospel of John is read with Hebraic eyes, that is with some appreciation of
these many Hebraisms, it is most unlikely that any part of it will be seen to be
interpreted to support the doctrine of the pre-existence of Yeshua1

John 3:3-9
(3) Jesus replied to him, “Truly, truly, unless someone is born again (ANOTEN
FROM ABOVE) , he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
(4) Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He
cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
(5) Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit,
he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
(6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit
is spirit.
(7) Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
(8) The wind blows wherever it wishes; you hear its sound, but you do not
know where it came from or where it is going. So is everyone who is born of
the Spirit.”
(9) Nicodemus replied and said to him, “How can these things be?”
You must be born again of water & of the Holy Spirit
You must be born again of water & of the Holy Spirit
You must be born again of water & of the Holy Spirit
• Shavu’ot foreshadowed and even marked the giving of the Holy Spirit to
Yah’s elect. For the Holy Spirit empowers us to live and walk out Torah the
way Yeshua taught and modeled for us during His earthly ministry. The Holy
Spirit (ie., the Ruach haKodesh):
 Inspires us to do the will of YHVH our Elohim.
 Empowers us to walk in the will of YHVH our Elohim.
 Comforts us in the midst of trials and tribulations.
 It enlightens us by revealing the meaning of YHVH’s eternal Word of Truth.
 And when we can’t remember what Father said about a particular thing in
His Word of Truth, it brings those things to our remembrance at the proper
time.
 It creates, resurrects and heals in the mighty Name of Yeshua.
 And so much more.
Yeshua Explained to Nakidmon the Work of the Ruach HaKodesh
Jesus explained to Nicodemus that God’s Spirit is an unbridled personal cosmic
force that submits to the leadership of God alone.
 This personal cosmic force brings about the new birth that allows someone
to be counted among those belonging to the Kingdom of God.
Jesus’ rhetorical question to Nicodemus was also a challenge to the authority
of the Ioudaioi of which Nicodemus, at least for the time being, was still a part.
 Throughout the Gospel we see that the Ioudaioi show themselves to be
clueless and insensitive to the things of the Spirit. It is no wonder that
Nicodemus, the best and most spiritually aware of them, does not know what
the One sent by God has in mind.
“What if my sages/leaders are also just as blinded and spiritually incapable as the leadership
of Jerusalem?” The story was a Judean self-critique that was meant to provoke Samaritan Israelites,
among others, to challenge their own authorities and to seriously consider pledging their allegiance to
Jesus. The main challenger to the current Judean and Samaritan leadership structures was talking with
Nicodemus at night. His name was Jesus. He was the Son of the Living God. ***
• HEBREW CULTURE and what it means to a christian

So to, "fear God," in the language of the Jew, means to

reverence, or worship God. The knowledge of God, which is so
frequently mentioned in the N.T. if taken according to the Hebrew
idiom, implies not only the mental knowledge of God, but the
worship and reverence of Him .
A DISCIPLE = TALMID/TALMIDAH/ TALMIDIM/TALMIDOT
= one who studies Scriptures with his/her rabbi as his
mentor.
TO STUDY the SCRIPTURE is the Highest form of worship that a
believer could ever attain . Why?
Because thru study you will have an intimate knowledge of God and
it will deepen your relationship with Him.
Mat 10:25 "It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher,
and the slave like his master
TRANSLATION
I am not someone who decries the very ideal
translation, or believes that all translations are
wrong and unuseful. Far from it. I believe that
translation work, into vernacular languages of

important.
I am also persuaded that no matter how good any
given translation is and no matter by what group
of people or individual/s it is accomplished, it is
still an interpretation of the original text we call
the Word of God and not the Word of God itself.

 BIBLICAL HEBREW, HEBRAIC THOUGHT, AND THE STAINS OF GREEK PHILOSOPHY
 Hebrew was always a God-centred language, spoken by a God-centred
people.
 Greek, on the other hand, has always been a humanistic language, the
language of science, of facts and reason.
 Whereas Greek is a cold clinical language filled with abstract concepts,
always wanting to know how something was possible in scientific terms,
 Hebrew thought patterns were vibrant, rich and colourful.
 Abstract thought was always expressed through concrete ideas - in Hebrew,
 for example, the mountains could break forth into shouts of joy, and all the
trees of the field could clap their hands.
 It is no wonder then that Martin Luther, struggling to translate the Hebrew Bible
into German, realised that it was impossible to convey so much so briefly in any
other language.
 Western thought patterns are built on the ancient Greek cultural legacy and
we try to understand the Scriptures from this point of view, and in the
process we have become ‘destroyed for lack of knowledge’.
 Our worldview, our beliefs, behaviours and identity, our ideas, practices and
attitudes have all been shaped by a Western-minded perspective.
 to gain a far better understanding of Hebraic thought and culture in order to
apply sound, basic principles of interpretation
In his Commentary of the New Testament, Bishop John Lightfoot, for example, wrote back in 1658:
• “ For, first, when all the books of the New Testament were written by Jews,
and among Jews, and unto them; and when all the discourses made there,
were made in like manner by Jews, and to Jews, and among them; I was
always fully persuaded, as of a thing past all doubting, that that Testament
could not but everywhere taste of and retain the Jews’ style and idiom, form,
and rule of speaking.”
In his Commentary of the New Testament, Bishop John Lightfoot, for example, wrote back in 1658:
 • We cannot escape the fact that Jesus of Nazareth rooted His
teaching and methods firmly in the known culture of His time.
 It is, after all, through His people, the Hebrew nation, that God’s
name (and therefore His very being) has been revealed
throughout all the earth (Exod 9:16).
 If we consider the characteristics of the Hebrew language and
mind, it should be clear that plain ‘Western-minded’ explanations
are often in danger of error.
 Context, in all its cultural, historical, geographical and literary
facets stands out as a sound point of departure, after which other
principles may be considered (for example, the principles of first
mention and single meaning).
In his Commentary of the New Testament, Bishop John Lightfoot, for example, wrote back in 1658:
 Another factor that has left a destructive trail on Joe Church’s understanding
of the Bible (and I include myself), is the application of the techniques of
Greek philosophy.
 Today I watch and listen to preachers and I shudder at the way in which they
string verses together to present a “truth”. Another technique is to use only
part of a verse, let alone putting it into its original contextual reality.
  In this way a whole new context is created. Even worse,
in this way new ‘revelation’ is created.
 I cannot deal here with this topic in extensive detail, but I wish to underline
the fact that, if we are searching to rightly divide the Word of Truth,
we can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to the damage these
techniques have done and are still doing.

In his Commentary of the New Testament, Bishop John Lightfoot, for example, wrote back in 1658:
•  If we are serious about truth and knowledge in the Biblical context, we have to get back to basics. If we do
not, we will continue to be deceived by what we regard as the light.
And we will continue to fall for unbiblical doctrines simply because
they are dressed up in Biblical terminology. ***
 Martie and I have been there for far too long, and we have been robbed for
most of our life of the fullness of the truth of kingdom living. And we suspect, so
has most of our readers.

 We cannot blame our pastors and teachers and televangelists and authors of
many books - we need to take the responsibility ourselves. That we have
been able to enjoy so much of the presence of God in our lives is testimony
to His Grace, for it has been not because of our great body of knowledge, but
despite our lack of knowledge.

Kingdom of Heaven = kingdom of God
Hebraisms in John:
 Many Christian Bible students approach the study of the Bible in a very much back-
to-front method by reading the New Testament with a modern Western
mindset and failing to appreciate that this Book was written by a number of
Jewish authors some 2000 years ago, who thought in a very different way
and expressed these thoughts in a language and culturally specific manner
which was very different to the way we tend to write and speak today.
 Their approach involved a significant number of cultural and Hebrew language
specific ‘idioms’ (characteristic modes of expression); idioms that are not common
in English usage today.
 For example, there is much greater use of figurative (vs literal) language than is common
in today’s works of literature (especially works of non-fiction).
 Add to this expressions that are so strange to the Western and English ear, that the
translators have often tried in many different ways to change them to make them more
understandable and accessible to modern English readers.

Every Jot and Tittle is Important
Yeshua taught that He did not come to
abolish the Torah. He said, “Until heaven and
earth pass away, not the smallest letter or
stroke shall pass from the Torah until all is
accomplished” (Matthew 5:18).

The smallest Hebrew letter, the letter yod )‫י‬

is only the size of an apostrophe. The “tittle”
probably refers to the small strokes of a
single letter, which distinguish similar- Every Jot and Tittle is Important

looking letters from one another. Yeshua’s

words allude to the careful scribal tradition
of Judaism.  The scribal tradition considers
a Torah scroll with a single defective letter
invalid.
Yeshua told His disciples that not even the smallest jot or tittle will “pass from
the Torah until all is accomplished” (Matthew 5:18).
At what point does that happen? When will all be accomplished?
People sometimes try to reverse Yeshua’s teaching about the ongoing
authority of the Torah. Some say that the words “until all is accomplished”
indicate a coming end to the Torah.
They teach that the Torah endured “until” Yeshua accomplished all things by His
death on the cross.
Others explain it to refer to the Torah’s ongoing validity “until” Yeshua accomplished
all things by His perfect obedience to it.
Still others suggest the Torah remained “until” the destruction of the Temple.
Each interpretation creates smoke and mirrors to alter the clear meaning.
The phrase “until all is accomplished” stands parallel to the phrase “until heaven and earth
pass away.”
In other words, the validity, authority, and unchanging revelation of the Torah will
continue until this present world is swallowed up into the new heavens and new earth of
the World to Come—that day when everything will have been accomplished.

The Anticipation of the Spirit in the Tanak
Although Luke does not utilize the connection between Shavuot and the giving of the Torah, Jeremiah's
anticipation of a new covenant between God and Israel establishes the relationship between Torah and the
indwelling of the Spirit (Jer 31:31-34).
Jer 31:31 Look, the days are coming—this is Yahweh’s declaration—when I will
establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
Jer 31:32 It will not be like the covenant that I established with their fathers in
the days when I took them by their hand to bring them out from the land of
Egypt. Those were the days when they broke my covenant, although I was a
husband for them—this is Yahweh’s declaration.
Jer 31:33 But this is the covenant that I will establish with the house of Israel
after these days—this is Yahweh’s declaration: I will place my law within them
and will write it on their heart, for I will be their God, and they will be my
people. Jer 31:34 Then each man will no longer teach his neighbor, or a man
teach his brother and say, ‘Know Yahweh!’ For all of them, from the smallest of
them to the greatest, will know me—this is Yahweh’s declaration—for I will
forgive their iniquity and will no longer call their sins to mind.”

magiging aking bayan.

Eze 36:22-27
(22) Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ’Lord Yahweh says this: I am not doing this for
your sake, house of Israel, but for my holy name, which you have profaned among the
nations everywhere you have gone.
(23) For I will make my great name holy, which you have profaned among the nations—in
the midst of the nations, you profaned it. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh—
this is Lord Yahweh’s declaration—when you see that I am holy.
(24) I will take you from the nations and gather you from every land, and I will bring you to
your land.
(25) Then I will sprinkle pure water on you so you will be purified from all of your impurities,
and I will purify you from all of your idols.
(26) I will give you a new heart and a new spirit in your innermost parts, and I will take away
the heart of stone from your flesh. For I will give you a heart of flesh.
(27) I will set my Spirit in you and enable you to walk in my statutes and keep my decrees,
so you will do them.

Mat 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but rather on the lampstand, and it shines

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked
Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the advice of the wicked, or stand in the
pathway with sinners, or sit in the assembly of mockers.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of Yahweh, and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psa 1:3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water that produces its fruit in its season,
whose leaves do not wither; whatever he does will prosper.
Psa 1:4 The wicked are not so, but are instead like the chaff that the wind drives away.
Psa 1:5 So the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the
righteous. Psa 1:6 For Yahweh approves of the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked
will perish.

The fact that creeds played such a central role in the self-definition of formative Christianity
greatly influenced the Church’s understanding and definition of faith. Even though the word
groups for “faith/believe” in the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures mean both “to believe” as well as
“to be faithful,”2 the Christian concept of “faith” is heavily weighted on the side of “agreeing to
the truth.” Many contemporary evangelism methods seek to persuade people to “believe in
Jesus,” indicated by raising one’s hand or walking forward to the front of the auditorium or
signing a confessional statement on a pamphlet or gospel tract. Once the person has agreed
that they “believe in Jesus,” they are pronounced “saved.” As a result, salvation is viewed as
granted to those who agree with a given theological statement or confession of faith. It is no
wonder, then, that in the Christian Church salvation is understood primarily as justification,
leaving sanctification as optional. Salvation is primarily forensic rather than practical, and thus
one can be “saved” even if one is never “sanctified.” What one believes is more important than
what one does. Such a perspective is the logical outcome of a Greek worldview. The Scriptures,
however, written by Hebrews from a Hebrew perspective, speak differently. Yeshua does not
say “you will know them by their creeds” but rather “you will know them by their fruit”
(Matthew 7:16, 20). When Yeshua speaks of “fruit,” He is talking about how one lives—one’s
actions. In other words, what one does is the fruit of what one truly believes, and therefore
deeds not creeds are the true measure of faith.
Mat 5:16 Let your light shine before people in such a way that they see your
good deeds and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this did not
come from you, it is the gift of God. Eph 2:9 Grace is not from works and so
no one may boast. Eph 2:10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus to do good deeds /works that God planned long ago for us, so that we
would walk in them.

GOOD WORKS IN HEBRAIC CONTEXT

Not an abstract term but Hebraism or has its roots in the Hebrew culture of
the first century.
BLOCK LOGIC AND PARADOX
Much of the teachings of the Bible involves paradox.
When taken from an Western mindset, contradictory patterns emerge, and it
becomes difficult to follow.
Marvin Wilson, in Our Father Abraham—Jewish Roots of the Christian Faith, discusses the approach of the Hebrews toward the teachings of God:

“The Semites of Bible times did not simply think truth—they experienced
truth…[T]ruth is as much an encounter as it is propositions…
To the Jew, the deed was always more important than the creed.
 He was not stymied by language that appeared contradictory from a human
point of view. Neither did he feel compelled to reconcile what
seemed irreconcilable.
 He believed that God ultimately was greater than any human attempt at
systematizing truth.
“Walking in truth’ (2 Jn. 4) and ‘living the truth’ (1 Jn. 1:6) were a higher priority
than rationally analyzing the truth. In the words of the renowned biblical scholar Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchikk
BLOCK LOGIC AND PARADOX
“The Hebraic mind is very practical. We are more interested in discovering what
God wants man to do than we are in describing God’s essence…as a teacher, I
never try to solve questions because most questions are unsolvable.’
 He concludes, ‘Judaism is never afraid of contradictions…it acknowledges that full
reconciliation of the two is possible only in God. He is the coincidence of opposites.’
 We can see this embrace of paradox clearly throughout the Scriptures, yet
 we still struggle to explain the unexplainable.
Concepts like the Trinity or free will and predestination were never
really meant to be charted out in a linear fashion.
  They cannot ultimately be explained in human terms.
 But they become even more cloudy when we attempt to view
Scripture through the analytical lens of Western thought rather than
through the heart of Hebrew thought.
Mat 5:16 Let your light shine before people in such a way that they see your
good deeds and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Eph 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this did not

pananampalataya, at ito'y hindi sa pamamagitan ng inyong sarili, ito'y kaloob ng Diyos;

Shavuot: The Word And The Spirit
The Day when the Heaven was open
1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one

place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent
wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues,
as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. (Acts 2:1-3)
 we have to remember that by the first century Shavuot was already
associated with the covenant made with Moses.
 We would then understand that it was certainly no coincidence that the
descent of the Spirit is described on the day of Pentecost,
 and we would be able to see all these beautiful and profound parallels
between God giving His Word and giving His Spirit. +++
 Since the most important and profound event in Jewish history—receiving
the Torah at Mount Sinai—happened on Shavuot, it was certainly no
coincidence that Heaven was opened and the Spirit came down upon the
disciples on the same day. ****
Hidden and revealed
Messiah on the Day of
Shavuot
Hidden and revealed
In the Book of Acts, that the messianic status of Jesus is proclaimed publicly for the first time.
The contrast with His hiddenness in the gospels is radical. No words can better describe this abrupt change in the
atmosphere from the Gospel to Acts than the verse of Luke himself: “What you have spoken in the ear in inner
rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops[4].
As against hidden/concealed/only “in the ear” revealed secret of the messianic identity of
Jesus in the Gospel,
here in Acts 2 we hear an open proclamation of his Messiahship—for the very first time.
In his first public speech, Peter proclaims loudly (almost literally ‘on the housetops’),
that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah:
The secret, esoteric knowledge of the Gospel all of a sudden becomes a widely
broadcast message in Acts;
the secret of Jesus’ messiahship is revealed – and it happens on Shavuot.
Act_2:36 Therefore, let all the house of Israel certainly know that God has made him both
Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Act_4:10 May this be known to you all and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of
Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— it is by him
that this man stands here healthy before you.
Hidden and revealed

Act 4:10-12(10) May this be known to you all and to all the people of Israel, that
in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised
from the dead— it is by him that this man stands here healthy before
you.(11) Jesus Christ is the stone which you as builders despised but which has
been made the head cornerstone.(12) There is no salvation in any other
person: For there is no other name under heaven, that is given among men,
by which we must be saved.”
Act 4:12 Walang kaligtasan sa kanino pa man, sapagkat walang ibang pangalan

Hidden and revealed
Moreover, we can see here several “hidden and revealed” topics connected to
Shavuot.
Just think of it: every Jew knew that the Torah was given on Shavuot, since it
had been revealed in Jewish tradition.
However, for some reason it is completely hidden from Christians.

 On the other hand, every Christian knows that the outpouring of the Spirit
happened on Pentecost, although not every Christian is aware that Pentecost
is Shavuot. ***
 It is revealed in the New Testament, but hidden completely
from the Jews. ***
Of course, only the full revelation can give us the full picture of God’s plan – and
here we see how much they need one another. ***
Ephesians 3:6-7 This mystery is that through the gospel the
Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together
of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ
Jesus. (Yeshua HaMashiac)

Ephesians 3:10 His intent was that now, through the

church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known,

The Promise:

Zechariah 14:15-17 Then the survivors from all the

nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after
year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty, and to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

The Lord’s Feasts reveal The Kingdom Of God

So, I will use this moment to tell you the Parable that I always tell when
teaching on Judaism and Christianity.
The Parable of Long Spoons exists in many cultures and in different
versions. It tells about a man who asked God to show him Heaven and
Hell. God showed the man two rooms. In the first one, a large table was
set. It was full of delicious dishes, but the people sitting around it looked
miserable: Their spoons had very long handles, longer than their arms,
and they were not able to eat with these spoons because they could not
get the spoons into their mouths. They were sitting at the full table, but
starving – and that was Hell.
The second room looked exactly the same. There was also a large table
set with delicious dishes, and the people around had the same long
spoons. Only these people were well nourished and happy,
because with the same long spoons, they fed one another –
and that was Heaven.
This parable teaches us that caring for others is the best way
to care for ourselves.
People can perish or thrive, depending on how they treat one
another, and while that is undoubtedly true for each one of
us, it is also very true in regard to Jews and Christians—
Judaism and Christianity – and Shavuot-Pentecost is
undoubtedly a very good reason to remember it! ***
A very important Hebraism - Agency
A very important Hebraism - Agency
 In Hebrew thought, the “first cause” is not always
distinguished from “intermediate” or “secondary”
causes.
 The principal is not always clearly distinguished from
the agent, the one commissioned to carry out an act on
behalf of another.
 Sometimes the agent, standing for the principal, is
treated as if he or she were the principal him or herself,
though this is not literally so.
 Principal and agent remain two distinct persons but
they act in complete harmony.
 The agent acts and speaks for his principal.
Jesus continued his conversation with Nicodemus around the familiar theme
of the Son of Man. This was a well-known concept at the time of Jesus.
Daniel 7:13-14: It is based on this passage in Daniel.
I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a
Son of Man was coming, and He came up to the Ancient of Days and was presented
before Him. And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom that all the
peoples, nations and men of every language might serve Him. His dominion is an
everlasting dominion which will not pass away; and His kingdom is one which will
not be destroyed.
At
Joh 3:13 No one has ascended into
heaven except he who descended from
heaven—the Son of Man. :14 Just as
Moses lifted up the serpent in the
wilderness, so must the Son of Man be
lifted up, 15 so that all who believe in
him may have eternal life.
Joh 3:13 Wala pang umakyat sa langit,
maliban sa kanya na bumabang galing sa
langit, ang Anak ng Tao. Joh 3:14 Kung
paanong itinaas ni Moises sa ilang ang
ahas, kailangan din namang itaas ang
Anak ng Tao; Joh 3:15 upang ang
sinumang sumampalataya sa kanya ay
magkaroon ng buhay na walang
hanggan.
the discussion about the Son of Man who comes down in order to go up. (Jn. 3:13 , Dan. 7:13-14)
In the Torah, looking up at the bronze serpent on the pole destroyed the
venom of the serpent’s bite and brought life to the people of Israel. >>> Num. 21:8
Likewise, Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross also speaks of judgment
and victory over the “venom of the serpent’s bite.” >>>
The ascension is a glorious picture of victory over the enemies of God
and his Israel,
but one must first look to the Cross where Jesus, the King of All Israel, is
first lifted up.
When Nicodemus saw the Son of Man crucified/lifted up, he must have
recalled Jesus’ words, and yes, also by faith understood that his ascension was soon
coming. ***
At the time, Jesus’ statement sounded strange and disconnected.
After the crucifixion, one imagines that Nicodemus waited quietly to see the
fulfilment of what he believed Jesus had said.
Act 10:39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the
land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a
tree:
John 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a
garden; and in the garden was a new tomb in which no person had
yet been buried.
Gal 3:13 Christ
redeemed us from the
curse of the law by
becoming a curse for
us—for it is written,
“Cursed is everyone
who hangs on a tree”—
Gal 3:13 Tinubos tayo
ni Cristo mula sa sumpa
ng kautusan nang
siya'y naging sumpa
para sa atin — sapagkat
nasusulat, "Sumpain
ang bawat binibitay sa

So is this Hebraism in John?
• Another common Hebraism was to use the term ‘father’
to represent the originator or inventor of a new thing or
approach.
Also, Abraham was known as the ‘father of faith’ as he was the
founder (the first) of the religion of the Hebrews (Hebrew meaning
‘to cross over’ and originating from the fact the Abraham ‘crossed
over’ the great Euphrates river to heed the call from God).
Rom_4:12 This also meant that Abraham became the father of
circumcision for those who come not only from the circumcision, but
also for those who follow in the steps of our father Abraham. And
this was the faith that he had in uncircumcision.
So is this Hebraism in John?
• Another very common Hebraism is to make the ‘name’ of someone
synonymous with that person.
This is very common throughout the Tanakh (OT) , but we can clearly
see its use in Acts1:15 "The number of names together were about an hundred
and twenty." Does John’s Gospel make use of this Hebraism?
John 1:12, "As many as received him = (Yeshua), to them gave he power --- even to them that believe on his name.";
John 3:18, "He that believes on him = (Yeshua) is not condemned."; and
John 20:31, "Believing you might have life through = (in) his name."

Even certain common nouns are clearly Hebrew in origin rather than Greek or even Aramaic.
In John 20:16 we read ‘Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him in Hebrew,
“Rabboni!”. (NASB)
and in the CJB it reads:
"Yeshua said to her, “Miryam!” Turning, she cried out to him in Hebrew, “Rabbani!” (that is,
“Teacher!”)."
Jesus healing the centurion’s servant
 Matthew speaks of a conversation between the centurion himself and
Jesus (Mt. 8:5-13).
 Luke tells us that the centurion did not in fact come personally. He sent
some “Jewish elders” and then some “friends” to Jesus with his requests
(Luke 7:1-10).
The burning bush:
 The LORD God spoke out of the burning bush (Deut 4:12)

 Acts 7:30; 38
 Stephen clarifies that it was an angel who spoke with the voice of Yahweh.

 Acts 12:7 vs 12:17 – Peter in prison - v17 ‘God’ (not the angel) had led him
act of the prison.
BLOCK LOGIC = TENSION = CYCLICAL PATTERN
= TO SEE TRUTHS AS PART OF THE WHOLE
 ”In the Hebraic approach, concepts were expressed in
self-contained units or blocks of thought.

 These blocks did not necessarily fit together in

any obviously rational or harmonious pattern,
particularly when one block represented the
human perspective on truth and the other
represented the divine.

 The Hebrews, however, sense no violation of their

freedom as they accomplish God's purposes.
 Marvin Wilson ‘Our Father Abraham’
THE USE OF WHAT MAY BE TERMED BLOCK LOGIC IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT CONTOUR
OF HEBREW THOUGHT.

• GREEK LOGIC, WHICH HAS TO A LARGE EXTENT INFLUENCED THE WESTERN WORLD,
WAS DIFFERENT.
• THE GREEKS OFTEN USED A TIGHTLY CONTAINED STEP LOGIC WHEREBY ONE
WOULD ARGUE FROM PREMISES TO A CONCLUSION, EACH STEP LINKED TIGHTLY TO
THE NEXT IN COHERENT, RATIONAL, LOGICAL FASHION.
• THE CONCLUSION, HOWEVER, WAS USUALLY LIMITED TO ONE POINT OF VIEW—THE
HUMAN BEING’S PERCEPTION OF REALITY

• Block logic is the mindset, that one can accept two

opposing ideas as both equally true… it all depends on
whose perception one is looking through.
Who hardened Pharaoh's heart? According to "block logic": BOTH PARTIES.
God and Pharaoh did it (Exodus 9:12, 8:32). Both claims/verses are true.
 ".... Let me illustrate this with several theological examples.
 The Scriptures teach that God has ordained all things (Romans 8:28; 11:36;
etc.). The Scriptures also teach that prayer changes things (Matthew 7:7;
James 4:2).
 In Greek linear logic, these two apparently contradictory facts cannot
exist in the unified system of truth. One of them must be false.
 It is this kind of linear logic that gave rise to competing theological
systems,  one in which people believe God ordains all things and which
therefore attempts to diminish the efficacy of prayer, and the other,
where God's sovereign ordination of events is denied and prayer is
emphasized as the means for change in our world.

The Greeks, from whom we inherited a great deal of how we do

theology, sought to argue from a premise to a conclusion.
The goal was to create a logical and coherent discipline of the
mind.

Creates new context… recreated a totally different text…..

Pose a real danger…. Even it use BIBLICAL TERMINOLOGY !
• This is something very different from the Greek way of thinking.
• In “block logic” concepts that do not appear to fit together, forming a
cozy and rational pattern, are “blocked” together and faced honestly.
• Whether these concepts appear to be awkward or contradictory they are
never separated.
• in the Hebrew world this way of thinking created “a propensity for
Barry L. Callen says that

paradox” (Caught Between Truths, Emeth Publishers: Lexington, KY, 2007, 11).

• Western minds, especially Christian minds, have a hard time with

this idea because we were so profoundly influenced by Greek and
Roman thought.
• We see all truth as linear and logical. ***
• But, as Barry L. Callen has rightly concluded: “The Bible is filled with
block logic” (11).
The last shall be first and the first shall be last:
Matt 19:27-30
Then Peter said in reply, See, we have left everything and followed you.
What then will we have?
Jesus said to them, Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of
Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit
on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother
or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will
inherit eternal life.
But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
God makes us act and yet we choose our
actions:
 Ex 8:15
But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart and
would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

vs Ex 7:3
But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my signs and
wonders in the land of Egypt,
God is the maker of evil; He is wrathful and yet He is the maker
of good; He is merciful:
Isaiah 45.7
I form light and create darkness,
I make well-being and create calamity,
I am the LORD, who does all these things.

vs Habakuk 3:2
O LORD, I have heard the report of you,
and your work, O LORD, do I fear.
In the midst of the years revive it;
in the midst of the years make it known;
in wrath remember mercy.

Question 3:
One of the biggest questions of all: Why does God permit/make evil?
Yeshua is the Lamb of God and also the Lion
of Judah:
John 1:29
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, Behold, the
Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

vs Rev 5:5
And one of the elders said to me, Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the
tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the
scroll and its seven seals.
The end of unbelievers (Hell) is described as ‘utter
darkness’ and a ‘lake of fire’.
Jude 11-13
Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain
to Balaam's error and perished in Korah's rebellion. These are blemishes on your love feasts, as
they feast with you without fear, looking after themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds;
fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of
their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved
forever.
Rev 19:20
And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs
by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its
image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.
God determines who is ‘saved’ and who isn’t and yet we
can choose him
John 6:37
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will
never cast out.
Deut 30:19-20
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life
and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your
offspring may live, loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast
to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that
the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
Jn 6:44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I
will raise him up on the last day.
You can find your life but in doing so you will lose it!
 Mat 10:39
Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will
find it.
And in that time there will be neither hunger nor war,
neither jealousy nor competition, but goodness will
spread over everything. And all the delights will be as
common as dust. And the whole world will have no other
occupation but only to know the Lord. And therefore
Israel will be great sages, and knowers of secret things,
and they will attain a knowledge of their Creator as far as
the power of man allows, as it is written, For the earth
shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters
covers the sea (Isa. 11:9)

(Maimonides, Yad haHazaqa, Shoftim, Hilkhot M’lakhim 11-12)

When you are weak you are strong!
 2 Cor 12:10
For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults,
hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am
strong.
If you lift yourself up you will be lowered but if you lower
yourself you will be lifted up!
 Luke 14:11
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles
himself will be exalted.
The Messiah is the Prince of Peace and yet he
comes with a sword.
Matt 5:9:
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government
shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called …. Prince
of Peace.

Matt 10:34 - 36
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have
not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a
man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's
enemies will be those of his own household.
Preaching of cross is foolishness …
1 Cor 1:18-19, 26-29
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the
discernment of the discerning I will thwart. For the foolishness of
God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than
men.

26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise
according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not
many were of noble birth.
27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise;
God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;
28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that
are not, to bring to nothing things that are,
29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
Dealing with fools?
 Prov. 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him
yourself.
 Prov. 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own
eyes.
John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us. We have
seen his glory, glory as of the one and only who came from the
Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses. Grace and
truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The one and
only God, who at the side of the Father, he has made him
known.

Approaching the Bible with a Western mindset means looking at theology
from a linear, logical perspective.
 We read Paul’s writings thinking that he is describing God with a
mathematical equation, presenting each piece of evidence in a very specific
order, which, if followed to its inevitable conclusion, will produce faith.
 God, to the Western mind, is a theoretical concept that must be
proven.
 To the Hebrew mind, however, things are not linear, but circular.
 God’s existence is not a theory to be proven, but a truth to be
experienced.
 The concepts being described in the Bible are not intended to be
dissected and examined but taken as a whole and applied to our
lives.

your comprehension of it, God can and will use it all

honour Him and so draw others to Him as they see joy
in your life in good times and bad.
