Measles Disease
 An acute viral infection
 Airborne transmission via respiratory
secretions or aerosols
 Classic manifestations:
 Maculopapular rash
 Fever
 The “3Cs”: Cough, Coryza (runny nose),
Conjunctivitis (red eyes)
 Complications and mortality highest in
children < 5 yrs and in adults
Measles complications (1)
Corneal scarring
causing blindness
Vitamin A deficiency

Encephalitis
Older children, adults
≈ 0.1% of cases
Chronic disability

Pneumonia &
diarrhea
Diarrhea common in developing countries
Pneumonia ~ 5-10% of cases, usually bacterial
What is congenital rubella syndrome
(CRS)?

Rubella infection in pregnant women may have serious


consequences causing miscarriages, stillbirths or
severe birth defects known as congenital rubella
syndrome (CRS).
Children with CRS can suffer
Hearing impairments,
Cataracts,
Heart defects,
Developmental delay and
many other lifelong disabilities

Facts of Measles Rubella Campaign.

 It’s a very important national activity, health department


needs support and coordination from every department,
agency including Media
 The target is to reach more than > 95% children in all
townships in Indonesia, vaccinated 70 million children in age
group of 9moths to 15 years
 East Jawa has 7.8 million children to be vaccinated
 Aim is to eliminate measles/ control rubella/CRS by 2020
 Needs support and cooperation by one and all to reach
every child.
Why is a Measles Rubella vaccination
campaign being conducted?

 The purpose of the Measles-Rubella campaign is to protect


your child and eliminate transmission of Measles and Rubella
virus from the community by vaccinating >95 % target children
with MR vaccine.
 MR campaign is a special ( Rubella is new vaccine) to
vaccinate all children of 9 months to <15 years of age group
irrespective of previous immunization status
 This additional campaign dose will boost the immunity of child
and protect the entire community by eliminating transmission of
measles and rubella.
How can I protect my child from
measles and rubella?

Measles-rubella (MR) vaccine is given


for preventing both measles and rubella
diseases in the child
No specific treatment is available for
measles and rubella but these diseases
can easily be prevented by vaccination
