This document describes the different positions of the Lead Trail switch on railway control stands:
1) Lead position allows the auto and independent brakes to work normally.
2) Trail position prevents the auto brake from working except in emergencies and disables the direct brake.
3) Test position maintains equalizing pressure at 5.2 kg/cm2 even if brake pipe pressure drops to allow attaching locomotives without penalty brake applications.
It also provides instructions for using the switch in different situations like attaching locomotives, performing leakage tests, and running locomotives as bankers or in multiple units.

Control Stands, and is having 4 Positions:- Lead, Trail, Test and Helper. 1) Lead:- (Working Control Console) Auto Brake and Independent Brake will work. 2)Trail:- (Non-Working Control Stand) Auto Brake will not work except in Emergency Position, and DIR Brake will not function. 3)Test:- When L/T Switch is in Test mode:- EQ Pressure is maintained to 5.2Kg/Cm2. (Even if BP Pressure is O)
When LT Switch is in Test :-
BC Pressure builds up to 5.2 Kgcm2 (Even if the DIR Brake handle is in Release condition.) When to Use Test Mode A) While attaching a WDG4/WDP4 Loco, when BP Pipe is coupled and before opening the Angle coc’s, to avoid Penalty Brake Application, L/T Switch to be kept in Test. When L/T Switch is in Test mode EQ Pressure is maintained to 5.2 Kg/Cm2 hence no Penalty Brake Application takes place while opening the BP angle coc’s of the loco and formation during attaching. B) To Conduct Formation Leakage Test Procedure to Conduct Formtion Leakage Test Charge BP to 5.2 Kgcm2. Drop BP by 1.2 Kgcm2, retain 4.0 Kgcm2 of BP. Move Lead Trail Switch from Lead to Test. Wait for 5 minutes, if the rate of leakage is more than 1.25Kgcm2, formation to be checked by the TXR. 4) Helper: In this mode :- Auto Brake will not function except in Emergency Position, DIR Brakewill function normally. Used during:- 1) Banking 2) Double Head and 3)while moving a WDG4/WDP4 Loco in Idle Condition coupled to another Working Loco or next to Train Engine Procedure to attach as Banker Attach the Loco in rear of the Formation and Couple Up the Loco CBC to formation Release DIR Brake, (after 60 Seconds alerter Lamp will flash for 17 seconds, and hooter will also sound for another 17 seconds, further Alerter Penalty will take Place. BP drops to 0, and PCS Open Indication will glow on Control Stands) Move LT Switch to HLPR and Couple up the BP Pipe of the Loco to the formation BP Pipe.
(As and When the Formation BP
Pressure charges to the banking Loco PCS Open Light glows Off.) EM-2000 will display Air Brake Penalty, Place handle in FS for 10 Seconds.
Move Auto Brake Handle
to FS. After 10 Seconds EM-2000 will display To Restore Normal Air Brake Operation Place Automatic handle in Running. Do not move the Auto Brake to Running until Banking /DH Service is completed. (In EMD Locos)
In Medha Locos and in CCB-2
fitted Locos move handle to RUN, (For Banker Operation) After 3 seconds move it back to FS In EMD Locos Alerter will not operate. In Medha and CCB fitted Locos Alter will be in operation as normally during banking. During reduction of Trainline Pressure (BP) Conjunction brake will apply in the Banking Loco and if Bail off Switch in the banking Loco is operated Loco Brakes will release in the banking Loco.
