Introduction:
• Dam, structure built across a stream, a river, or an estuary
to retain water.
•Many dams are built for more than one purpose; for
example, water in a single reservoir can be used for fishing,
to generate hydroelectric power, and to support an
irrigation system.

7/27/19 3
Function of Dam:
•Dams provide a means of regulating downstream surface
water flows over space and time by altering the natural
spatial and temporal distributions of streams flows.

Classification of Dam:
•Arch Dam
•Gravity Dam
•Buttress Dam
•Embankment Dam

7/27/19 5
Purpose of Dam:
•Water supply – Dams gather drinking water for people
•Irrigation – Dams help farmers bring water to their farms
•Hydroelectric – Dams help create power and electricity from water
•Navigation – Dams create lakes for people to sail on from one part to another
•Recreation – Dams can be used for swimming

Three gorges Dam:
•World’s largest dam.
•Location – Yangtze river by the town of sandouping in Yilling
district, china.
•World’s largest power station by installed capacity (22500 MW)
since 2012.
•Create world record in 2014 for generating 98.8 terawatt/hour. Now
new world record is achieved by Itaipu dam in 2016, producing
103.1 twh.

7/27/19 7
•Purpose – Power, flood control, navigation
•Construction begin – December 14,1994
•Opening date – 2003
•Construction cost – 31.65 billion us$
•Type – Gravity dam
•Height – 181m
•Length – 2335m
•Width(crest) – 40m

7/27/19 8
•Width(base) – 115m
•Reservoir capacity – 39.3km^2
•Catchment area – 1000000km^2

Conclusion:
Dams and reservoirs, though effective sources of
water and electricity, are immensely detrimental to
the environment. ... At present, it is not possible to
eliminate all dams. Still, there must be efforts to take
down old, outdated dams and to return as many
rivers to their natural state as possible.
