VCO and Transparent Soap

Presented by : Benisa Alfina

Background

Coconut can be used as a VCO or Virgin Coconut Oil. VCO is product which

has high economy, because it has functions for human health and for industry.

One of utilization from VCO for industry is making transparent soap.

VCO ( Virgin Coconut Oil)

VCO is coconut oil which comes from fresh old coconut fruit. VCO can be
processed through low temperature method, fermentation method,
enzymatic method, and centrifugation method. VCO is different with another
oil, VCO cannot be producted by chemical substance addition and involving
high temperature. The other says VCO is high quality coconut oil, because less
water content and free fatty acid with much lauric acid ± 50%.
The Chemical contents of VCO
SATURATED FATTY ACID COMPOSITION (%)
Caproic acid (C₆H₁₂O₂) 0,4
Caprylic acid (C₈H₁₆O₂) 6,8
Capric acid (C₁₀H₂₀O₂) 6,0
Lauric acid (C₁₂H₂₄O₂) 46,0
Myristic acid (C₁₄H₂₈O₂) 19,9
Palmitic acid (C₁₆H₃₂O₂) 9,8
Stearic acid (C₁₈H₃₆O₂) 3,4
UNSATURATED FATTY ACID
Oleic acid 6,4
Linoleic acid 1,3
The chemical – physical characteristics of VCO

Color : colorless to yellow

Flavor : natural fresh coconut oil
Density at 25°C (g/ml) : 0,917 – 0,919
Viscosity at 50°C (Cp) : 24
Free fatty acid/ FFA (%) : 0,01-0,1
Saponification value (mgKOH/g) : 250 – 264
Iodine value (mg Iod/g) : 7,5 – 10,5
Moisture (%) : 0,1 – 0,25
Method of VCO processing
 Low temperature heating method
The principle of this method is heating the coconut milk with low temperature
55°C – 70 °C, then purification is done by heating in 60 °C – 70 °C
 Enzymatic method
The principle of this method is enzyme addition to coconut milk
 Fermentation method
The principle of this method is bacterial activity in coconut milk. Bacterial has
function to produce enzyme , furthermore enzyme and coconut milk produce
VCO
 Centrifugation method
The principle of this method isbpressure force and centrifugal method.
Transparent soap
TRANSPARENT SOAP

Transparent soap is stick soap with transparent appearance and resulting soft

foam. Generally transparent was made by reacting oil and alkali become

soap stock. Furthermore soap stock was solved by alcohol to make clear

solution. Then supporting material was added

PROCEDURES
A. MAKING VCO
1. Apparatus
Beaker glass, measuring glass, hot plate, fiter, paper separation, fabric, paddle,
thermometer, technical balance, reagen bottle
2. Material for producing
The material in making VCO are 500 grams of coconut craps and 500 ml of water
3. Procedur
 Coconut craps is added with 500 ml of water. Then it is squeezed by clean fabric
to result coconut milk.
 Input the coconut milk into funnel separation and wait while ± 1 hour. Then
separate the cream and water
 Input the cream into beaker glass then stir and heat it with 55 – 70°C. after the
VCO and cake appearance, separate them
 VCO should be foltrated by paper separation and heated by beaker glass in 60 –
70 °C
B. Making transparent soap
1. Apparatus
Beaker glass, thermometer, technical balance ,stirrer, hot plate, paddle, and
former
2. Material for making transparent soap
VCO, NaOH, stearic acid, sand sugar, glyserin, TEA, and alcohol
PROCEDUR

• Heat oil and stearic acid on beaker glass 60-65 °C

• Heat NaOH solution on beaker glass in 60 °C
• Input NaOH solution into VCO little by little and keep the temperature in 60
°C until get soap stock
• Input the stearic acid, alcohol , sugar solution , TEA, and glyserin to the
soap stock
• Add dye and fragrance
• Then form the soap
