PHASE CHANGE

 Phase changes are transformations

of matter from one physical state to
another
TYPES OF PHASE CHANGES.

1. melting = change from solid to

liquid
2. Vaporization = liquid to gas
3. Sublimation. = solid to gas
endothermic processes = changes take
place when heat is absorbed (heat
gained).
 4. condensation = gas to liquid
 5. deposition = gas to solid
 6. freezing. =liquid to solid
 exothermic processes = changes give
off heat (heat lost)
HEAT CHANGE WITH CHANGE IN
TEMPERATURE
 heating curve =graph that shows the
change in temperature of a
substance as it is being heated
 specific heat of the substance.= the
amount of heat needed to raise the
temperature of 1 gram of a
substance by 1ºC.
 The heat change (q) for this process is given by:

 where m = mass of sample in grams

 S = specific heat of the sample in the appropriate
physical state
 T = change in temperature
 Sample Problem:
 You found a piece of copper metal
weighing 3.10 g imbedded in an ice block.
How much heat is absorbed by the piece of
metal as it warms in your hand from the
temperature of the ice block at 1.5 oº to
your body temperature of 37.0 ºC? The
specific heat of copper is 0.385 J/g-ºC.
Assume that the metal is pure copper.
q = m S ΔT
 = (3.10 g)(0.385 J/g-ºC)(37.0 ºC – 1.5
ºC)
 = 42.4 J
