Effects of Hazards
What is Chemical eye burns – Chemical exposure to any part of the Eye or Eyelid
results a chemical Eye burn which divided in to three categories.
Categories of Chemical burn
Alkali Burns with common alkali – Hydroxides of ammonia, Potassium hydroxide,
magnesium and lime.
Acid Burns with common acids – Sulphuric acid, sulphurous, Hydrocloric, Nitric, Chromic &
Hydrofluoric
Irritants – The Substances having neutral pH causes discomfort to the eye than actual
damage
.
Symptoms
Pain, Redness, Irritation
Tearing. Inability to keep
the eye open, Sensation of
something in the eye
Swelling of eyelids & lastly
Eye Damage
Body Injury
Skin Damage
Prevention
The Factories Act, 1948, and the various Rules framed thereunder require
that hazardous chemicals should be expeditiously removed from direct contact
with body by taking suitable steps. Especially when a corrosive or irritating
chemical affects a vital organ like the eyes, the effects may range from mild
irritation to severe burn injuries. In such situations, it is essential that the body
and eyes are washed with large volumes of clean water for removal of the
chemicals as well as for its dilution. Such flooding with large volumes of water
also dissipates the heat generated during a chemical reaction which may take
place between the chemical and water. It is essential that in all areas where
exposure to such corrosive or toxic chemicals is possible, adequate eye and
face protection of proper type is used by the concerned persons. Such
protection for eyes, face and entire body can be easily provided by
emergency eyewash fountains and emergency safety showers, if they are
suitably located and properly designed and maintained
ANSI
The 2014 update to Z358.1 added two important criteria. The first
is that the requirement for tepid water is now defined as having a
temperature of between 60 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 37
degrees Celsius). The second change addresses simultaneous
operation for combination units. This means that if you have a
drench shower combined with an eyewash station, both devices
must provide adequate flows and be fully operable at the same
time.
Always Mind These Labels
Toxic
Water Flow / Minute – at least 1.5 ltr for Eye wash and 76 Ltr for
Shower
Water Pressure – 2 kgf for Eye wash and 2.8 kgf for Shower
Why Pedal – When your eye get affected with any chemical or other
things it is not possible to open the eyewash with the help of the push
plate so pedal operating system of eyewash is essential.
