1
Introduction To Plant Layout
What?
Why?
When?
Where?
2
What is plant layout?
A plant layout is the systematic arrangements
of machinery and other equipment.
The subject of plant layout not only covers the
initial layout of machinery and other facilities
but encompasses improvement in, or revision
of, the existing layout in the light of subsequent
development in the method of production.
3
Why we need plant layout?
when a new plant is established, the question
of placement of machinery at different places,
the location of stores, inspection cabins, tools
room, maintenance wings, plating shops,
toilets, canteens, and trolleys and other
handling equipments arises.

Material-
When it is said that material
influence plant layout, what is
meant is that there is a need to
provide for storage and movement
of raw material until they are
converted into finished products.
The type and size of storage also
affects the layout.

Product-
A layout is designed with the ultimate purpose
of producing a product. Type of product
influence the layout.
Machinery-
The size and type of product, the
volume of its production , the type of
process and management policy
determines the size and type of
machinery to be installed which in
turn , influences the plant layout.

Types of layout
Process layout
Product layout
Fixed layout
Combination layout
Cellular manufacturing layout

Objectives of facility location
Provide enough production capacity.
Reduce material cost.
Reduce hazards to personnel.
Utilize available space efficiently.
Provide for employee safety and health.
Allow ease of maintenance.
Improve productivity.
Allow high machine/ equipment utilisation.
11
Importance
Weight, volume and mobility of product.
Complexity of final product
Effective use of available area.
Minimization of product delay.
Improved quality control
Improved utilization of product.
Better production control.
