“War” Vocabulary
• Record the vocabulary and definitions from

– 1) Discrimination- (noun) making a difference in treatment or
favor on some basis other than individual merit
– 2) Console- (verb) to alleviate a person’s grief, sense of loss,
or trouble; to comfort
– 3) pettiness (noun) a focus on unimportant or small-minded

– 4) Disillusion (noun) the state of being freed from misleading
images or naïve trust

occur later in the story

Read “War” and complete the following activities:
• Give the physical description of the husband and
wife and their beliefs.
• Give the physical description of the fat man and
his beliefs.
• Why does the fat man break down at the end of
the story?
• What might the wife’s coat symbolize?
• What hints in the story suggest the fat man does
not truly feel what he is claiming?
• Does the tone of the work change? Explain.
