The word grammar comes from Greek, meaning “craft of letters,”
which is an apt description. In any language, grammar is:
1. the systematic study and description of a language.
2. a set of rules and principles dealing with the word structures
(morphology) and sentence structures (syntax) of a language.
In linguistic terms, English grammar a.k.a Descriptive
grammar(actually used)is not the same as English usage or sometimes
called prescriptive grammar(should be used).
3. the study of how sentences mean.
4. the structural foundation of our ability to express ourselves. The
more we are aware of how it works, the more we can monitor the
meaning and effectiveness of the way we and others use language.
