INTRODUCTION
• Ice Stupa is a form of glacier grafting technique
that creates artificial glaciers used for storing
winter water in the form of conical shaped ice
heaps.

• Ice Stupa was invented by Sonam

Wangchuk in Ladakh (India) and the project is
undertaken by the NGO Students Educational
and Cultural Movement of Ladakh.

• Launched in October 2013, the test project

started in January 2014 under the project
name ’The Ice Stupa’ project. On 15 November
2016, Sonam Wangchuk was awarded
The Rolex Awards for Enterprise for his work on
Ice Stupa.
PURPOSE OF ICE STUPA
 Most villagers face water shortage during the months of
April and May when there is little water in the streams.
But again in mid-June there is an excess of water and
flood due to the fast melting of the snow and glaciers in
the mountains. By mid-September all farmers farming
activities end.

 Since the problem is getting worse, So there is only one

solution that is Ice Stupa.
DESIGN OF ICE STUPA
It took a month to build an
Ice Stupa approximately 7m
(22 feet) in height, fed by the
campus supply pipe which
has its headwork roughly
15m above the spot. The
entire Stupa finally finished
it’s melting on the 18th of
May, thus proving that
bigger masses at much
higher altitudes could last
well into mid-summer.
MECHANISM OF ICE STUPA
 The idea is very simple and needs no pumps or power. We all know
that water maintains its level. Therefore water piped from 60m
upstream would easily rise close to 60m up from ground when it
reaches the village.
IS ICE STUPA RELEVANT OR NOT?
 Though it is applicable in Ladakh, still it is not suitable for West
Bengal.

 Ice Stupa is such a prototype that it can’t be applicable in West Bengal

due to it’s climatic condition. As Ladakh is located in the northern part
of India, where weather is always snowy. Due to it’s weather contrast it
is pertinent in Ladakh and it is natural, based on basic science and cost
free.

 Due to disparity in climatic condition it is not possible in West Bengal.

Thats why, we use a alternative way for water reserving i.e. Rain
Water Harvesting.
ABOUT RAIN WATER
HARVESTING
• Rainwater Harvesting is the
process of collection
of rainwater from surfaces on
which rain falls, filtering it and
storing it for multiple uses.

• Rainwater harvesting is an
innovative technique utilized to
harvest rainwater from roofs and
other above surfaces to be stored for
later use.

• Tamilnadu is the first Indian state

to make rainwater harvesting
mandatory.
APPLICATION OF RAIN
WATER HARVESTING

 Agriculture

 Domestic use

 Industry
METHOD OF RAIN
WATER HARVESTING
 Surface Runoff Harvesting

 Rooftop Rain Water Harvesting

CONCLUSION

 The idea behind Ice Stupa is to freeze and hold the

water that keeps flowing and wasting away down the
streams and into the rivers throughout the winter. The
idea is very simple and needs no pumps or power.

 Rain water harvesting is a viable option to supplement

city water for non portable human uses, such as
irrigation. The system would be highly effective in high
commercial regions where there are ware houses and
large buildings.
