 Anthracene Glycoside

 Anthral Glycoside
 Althogh Anthraquinone is not used
extensively in medical practice ,it is the
starting material for the preparation of
several laxatives and represt the basic
structure of no of laxative.
 Borntrager test:- The derivatives of
anthraquinone present in purgative
drugs may be dihydroxy phenols such
as chrysophanol,trihydroxy phenol such
as carminic acid.
 TLC
-Solvent-
a.dichloromethane:methanol:formaldehy
de(8:2:1)
b.Ethylacetate:n-propanol:water(4:4:3)
-Detecting reagent- Ammonia Vapour or
Spechtrometry.
Properties:-
I. Sennoside occurs as a brownish
powder.
II. Sennoside soluble in alcohol,but
insoluble in acetone.
III. Purgative activity of senna is mainly
due to sennoside A&B while C&D
exerts powerful synergistic effect upon
purgative activity.
Use of Action:-
 used as effective cathertic agent for long
time.
 their action is due to their anthracene
constituent acting on the large intestine. The
sugar moiety helps to transport anthracene
aglycone intact to large intestine,where
aglycone is liberated by enzyme.
 Anthracene derivatives without sugar moiety
are broken down and only small amount
reaches to intestine to exert cathratic action.
 also used as purgative,cathratic,laxative
,in acute constipation.
 Gripping action –occur due to resin on
emodin.
 Used in haemhorridial,after anorectal
operation and anal fissure.
 For evaluation X-ray contrast media
from intestine.
