CHINESE NATIONAL HIGHWAY

FRIENDSHIP HIGHWAY
WORLD’S 8th WONDER

LONGEST ROAD
• 1300 kilometer long road. Starts from Kashgar
(China) passing through Gilgit Baltistan reach
to Abbottabad where it meets The Grand
Trunk Road at Hassan Abdal.
• Started in 1959 with the cooperation of
Pakistan and China. Completed in 1979 and
was opened for people in 1986. About 24000
worker worked day and night in its
construction
• At a height of 15,397 ft. above sea level,
the Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the highest
paved international road.
• The highway connects Pakistan’s Gilgit-
Baltistan region to China’s Xinjiang region
which is why it has also been nicknamed the
‘Friendship Highway’ in China.
• 15000 Pakistan and 9500 Chinese Specialists
and workers worked real hard and this project
came into existence.
• The Karakoram Highway includes 24 Larges
bridges, 70 Small bridges and 1708 waterways.
• Peoples were seriously injured and killed.
• About 810 Pakistanis and 200 Chinese lost their
lives during the construction of KKH
LANDSLIDE ON KKH
Many sites on the Karakoram Highway are prone to
landslides specially during the monsoon and winter
months. Landslide shelters have been constructed
at many points to protect the highway but still the
highway often gets closed for traffic for 2-3 days
due to landslides triggered by rainfall or snowfall.
• On June 30, 2006, a memorandum of
understanding was signed between the
Pakistani National Highway Authority (NHA)
and China's State-owned Assets Supervision
and Administration Commission (SASAC) to
rebuild and upgrade the Karakoram Highway.
China-Pakistan Friendship Tunnels
• In addition to flooding, a large earthquake rocked the region
nearest to the China-Pakistan border in 2010 causes massive
landslides.
• Portions of the N-35 were submerged.
• Construction of a 24 km series of bridges and tunnels began in
2012 and required 36 months for completion.
• The bypass consists of two large bridges, 78 culverts and five
kilometres (3.1 mi) worth of tunnels that were inaugurated for
public use on 14 September 2015 at a cost of $275 million
