IT implementation in Courier/Logistics Industry
Electronic Data Interchange: Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) refers to computer-to-computer exchange of business
documents in a standard format. EDI describe both the capability and practice of communicating information between two
organizations electronically instead of traditional form of mail, courier, & fax.

Barcoding and Scanner: Bar code scanners are most visible in the check out counter of super market. This code
specifies name of product and its manufacturer. Other applications are tracking the moving items such as components in PC
assembly operations, automobiles in assembly plants.

Data warehouse: Data warehouse is a consolidated database maintained separately from an organization’s production
system database. Many organizations have multiple databases. A data warehouse is organized around informational subjects
rather than specific business processes. Data held in data warehouses are time dependent, historical data may also be
aggregated.

Enterprise Resource planning (ERP) tools: Many companies now view ERP system (eg. Baan, SAP, People soft, etc.)
as the core of their IT infrastructure. ERP system have become enterprise wide transaction processing tools which capture
the data and reduce the manual activities and task associated with processing financial, inventory and customer order
information. ERP system achieve a high level of integration by utilizing a single data model, developing a common
understanding of what the shared data represents and establishing a set of rules for accessing data.
Recent Initiatives
● Increasing Adoption Of Robotics & Automation To Drive Efficiencies
● Cloud Computing
● Big Data Analytics Tools
● Mobile Apps
● Route Scheduling Systems
● Forecasting Systems
● Transport Management System
Social Media Applications

➢ Shipment schedules can be updated faster; there is an increase in the tracking, communication and visibility.

➢ Getting important information about weather conditions, accidents, road closures from social media to re-route deliveries.

➢ Learn more about the latest trends and other valuable insights from customers and leaders of industry.

➢ Share or obtain data for risk identification, search and collect innovative ideas, reach out to new employees, customers,

business partners and opportunities.

➢ Improved relationship with business partners and customers, their reviews and feedback.

➢ Increased efficiency, improved customer satisfaction and minimized operational costs.

Possible role of AI in the courier/logistics industry
1. Making Work Simple through resource management, cost reduction through reduced redundancies and
risk mitigation, bolstering traditional forecasting techniques, speeding up deliveries by optimizing routes,
better customer service.

1. Optimising Load Cost - AI can help monitor the conditions and choose the right price based on delivery
time depending on route and destination—a shipment is headed. These algorithms monitor a series of
parameters such as traffic, weather and socio-economic challenges that help companies reach a fair price
that both parties can agree on.

1. Optimizing Inventory- AI also helps to secure and manage the supplier inventory and the number of
trucks that are available for delivery. Smart algorithms offer this information ahead of time so clients know
the exact price and availability of certain inventory and trucks for a future delivery. AI also offers data
analysis to learn which carriers have moved what freight in the past at what price and service level.

1. Predictive Network Management- DHL has developed a machine learning-based tool to predict air
freight transit time delays in order to enable proactive mitigation. By analyzing 58 different parameters of
internal data, the machine learning model is able to predict if the average daily transit time for a given lane
is expected to rise or fall up to a week in advance.
Indian Post
