1) Make a smart seating choice. GCF / LCM:
2) Get out your HW from last night, Mr. Today we will
learn how to find
McKinney will come collect these from you. the greatest
3) Get out your math notebook and list the common factor
common factors for each set of numbers and the least
common multiple
below (hint: you may have to list all the factors for each for a given set of
number before you can tell which ones they have in common): numbers.

Greatest Common Factor
A whole number that is a factor of two or more nonzero
whole numbers is a common factor of those numbers.
Examples:
• 5 is a common factor of 10 and 25
• 6 is a common factor of 18 and 60
The largest of the common factors is the greatest common
factor (GCF).
Questions:
• What are some common factors for 24 and 36?
•  What is the GCF of 24 and 36?
• What is a good strategy for finding the GCF of a set of
numbers? For example, what would be the best way to
find the GCF of 18, 24, and 42?

Finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF):
What is the greatest common factor for 27, 45, and 72?
1) List all the factors out for each number in a logical way.
     27: 1, 3, 9, 27
     45: 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45
     72: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 72
2) Circle/highlight all of the common factors.
     27: 1, 3, 9, 27
     45: 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 45
     72: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 72

3) Your answer is the greatest factor that they all have in
common.
The GCF for 27, 45 & 72 is 9
Least Common Multiple (LCM)
A multiple of a number that is the product of the
number and any nonzero whole number (think "count-
bys").
Example: Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12... (the three dots means that the pattern continues forever)
A multiple that is shared by two or more numbers is a
common multiple.
Example: What are some common multiples of 12 and 16?
          12: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60. 72, 84, 96, 108
          16: 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128
Some common multiples for 12 and 16 are: 48 and 96
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) is the smallest multiple that the
numbers have in common.
The LCM for 12 and 16 is 48.
Least Common Multiple (LCM)
Questions:
• What are some common multiples for 9 and 14?

• What is the LCM for 9 and 14?

• What is a good strategy for finding the LCM for a given
set of numbers? For example, what is the best way to
find the LCM for 5, 9, and 12?
Finding the Least Common Multiple (LCM)

What is the LCM for 4, 9 and 24?

1) List the multiples for each number, starting with the
largest number. You can stop when you get to a number of
which they are all factors.
     24: 24, 48, 72, 96
     9: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72
     4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64, 68, 72

2) Sometimes you have to count for awhile, sometimes you

don't. Use your divisibility rules where possible, to help
you know when to stop.
3) The smallest multiple that they all have in common is the
LCM.
The LCM cor 4, 9 & 24 is 72.
