• An alphabetic system of phonetic notations.
• Used to accurately represent the pronunciation of
languages.
• Used in dictionaries to indicate the pronunciation
of words.
• Way of writing down sounds.

For example :
Egg = [ɛɡ]

Transcription Guidelines :
2. Print each symbol: Do not write it in long hand. Write all symbols in small
letter prints. There are no capital letters in transcription.
For example :

Princess = [prɪnˈses]
Church = [ tʃɜːrtʃ ]

3. Enclose each phonetics transcriptions in brackets – [ ].

4. Do not transcribe silent letters. Only the distinctive sounds heard are
presented by symbols.
For example :
