Objective Definition
A Superhydrophobic coating is a nanoscopic surface layer that repels water i.e., extremely difficult to wet & Droplets hitting this
kind of coating can fully rebound. The contact angles of a water droplet on an superhydrophobic material exceed 150°.
• Superhydrophobic (water) coating will completely repel most water-based, some oil-based & almost any liquid.
• It uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface. This barrier repels water, some
oils, wet concrete and other liquids unlike any other coating.

• Superhydrophobic textile fabrics via a one-step gas phase coating procedure by growing a layer of polymethylsilsesquioxane
Nano- filaments onto individual textile fibres

Feasibility
Unique Selling Proposition :
The USP of this product is wide application and large demand.

Benefits:
• Anti-Wetting- Superhydrophobic coating keeps objects dry. Water and many other liquids are easily repelled.
• Anti-Corrosion - Superhydrophobic coating offers enhanced corrosion protection since the coating repels water, saltwater,
aqueous acids and bases.
• Anti-Icing - Superhydrophobic properties keep coated materials completely dry, eliminating the formation of ice or, in the
case of frost, making the removal of ice dramatically easier.
• Anti-Contamination – Water and other liquids that contain bacteria or radiation never actually contact the surface of the
coated material so bacteria and radiation is greatly diminished or eliminated and the surface is easy to decontaminate. Dust
and dirt are easily removed with low pressure water.
• Self-Cleaning - Superhydrophobic coating repels dirty water and some oils, and remains clean and virtually bacteria-
free. When dust, dirt or other molecules accumulate on a superhydrophobic coated surface, a light spray of water or a blast
of air grabs the dust and removes it.
• Product Life-Extending – Many products fail from moisture, water, oil or simply getting too dirty for continued use.
Superhydrophobic coating can be used to extend the life by preventing the buildup of moisture and prevent corrosion. Hence
it extend the product life.

Project Assessment
Alignment with our Business: The Idea shared here is aligned with our current business. It falls under chemistry projects, a
successful execution will be a great opportunity for the business expansion of Unit-8.

Licensing/ Partnership / Patenting Opportunities: Institute collaboration may be required for early achievement. There is
definitely opportunity to rework on technology in order to have our own patented technology and licensing it.

Process Integration in Existing infrastructure / In-House Development: The R&D development is possible with some
existing infrastructure some advance equipment's for coating. For scaling up in production scale, definitely needs advanced
equipment's.

Proof of Concept: Not explored yet.

Investments / CAPEX required: Need to study

Risks Assessment: The technology involves complicated chemistry, Institute or industry collaboration may be
