Venous Drainage
Venous drainage is done by the short
ciliary veins, anterior ciliary veins, 4
vortex veins and the central retinal vein.
These eventually empty into the
cavernous sinus.
BLOOD SUPPLY
EYE GLOBE
• sclera :
- collagenous
- avascular (apart from some vessels on its
surface)
- relatively acellular.
The cornea and sclera merge at the corneal
edge (the limbus).
The chief functions of the cornea
• Epithelium
• Bowman membrane
• Stroma
• Descemet’s
membrane
• Endothelium
Epithelium
• Thin,semitransparent,multila
yered sheet of neural tissue
• lines the inner aspect of the
posterior two thirds of the
globe
• terminates anteriorly at the
ora serrata
Posterior Pole
Ten Layers of The Retina
6. Outer plexiform layer
1. Internal limiting membrane 7. Outer nuclear layer
2. Nerve fiber layer 8. Photoreceptor cell (rod & cone)
3. Ganglion cell layer 9. Retinal pigment epithelium
4. Inner plexiform layer (RPE)
5. Inner nuclear layer 10.Bruch membrane
Retinal Pigment Epithelium:
• Two sources :
• Central retinal artery
• 2/3 inner retina
• Choroidal blood vessels (65-
85%)
• 1/3 Outer retina
(particularly
photoreceptor)
• Fovea avascular zone
• Choroidal blood vessels
Physiology Of The Eye:
Image Formation
Refraction of Light:
• Controlled by extraocular
muscles
• To the left: levoversion
To the right: dextroversion
Upwards: sursumversion
Downwards:
deorsumversion
