Conversation analysis (CA),which is part of
sociology,which is also called
ethnometodology,which is a deatiled study of
humans that is provie or managed daily
1. Opening and closings
In conversation are often carried out in typical
ways.there are also context and spech event
specific.opening and closings often make use of
pairs of utterance .
example
a).opening : Hi,How are you ?

b).closing : see you later.


well,anyway I have got to go now
2. Adjacency pairs.
Adjancency pairs are utterances produced
by two successive speakers in such a way
that the second utterance is identified as
related to the first one as an expected
follow up.example :
A) Greeting : hello
B) Greeting : hi

A) Question : is that what you mean ?


B) Answe r : Yes
3.Topic management .
Is another important aspect of conversations it
includes a knowledge of appropriate topics and
taboo topics in particular settings.

4. Feedback .
The way that listeners show they are attending to
what is being said. Feedback can be done both
verbally,using takens such as mmm and uh huh .
Example : I am listening to what you are saying
,uhh uh might in english
5.Repair.
An important strategy speakers use in spoken
interaction is repair. That is,the way speakers
correct things that have been said in a
conversation.example
A: I am going to the movies tommorow ..i mean,
the opera

Or the other person might repair what we have


said

A : I am going to that restaurant we went to last


week you know the italian one in brunswick
street
B : you mean lygon street don’t you ?
A : yeah.that is right lygon street
