What is a Conveyor?
• Conveyors are gravity or power devices commonly used
to move uniform loads continuously from point to point
over a fixed path
• Conveyors are especially useful in applications involving
the transportation of heavy or bulky materials
• Conveyor systems allow quick and efficient
transportation for a variety of materials, which make
them very popular in the material handling & packaging
industries and pharmaceutical industries
• There are over 400 types of conveyors. We are only
going to discuss 7 of the most common conveyors that
can relate to all others
Types of Conveyors
• Roller Conveyors
• Belt Conveyors
• Screw Conveyors
• Chain Conveyors
• Flight Conveyors
• Pneumatic conveyors
Roller Conveyors
• Roller conveyors are one of the most common
conveyors used in industry because they are
inexpensive, simple to use
• A single shaft runs below the rollers running the length of
the conveyor which rotates the rollers and material gets
conveyed
• Quiet operation, as well as easy installation and
maintenance
Belt Conveyors
• Belt conveyors are used in a wide variety of material
transport applications such as manufacturing, food
processing, and heavy industry
• Belt Width ranges from 12 to 120 inches
• Belt Speeds determined by loads and
speed required
• Commercial applications include:
– Construction - heavy building materials
– Food and beverage processing
– Forestry - logging, sawmill, paper pulp, etc.
– Mining and quarrying
Screw Conveyors
• Screw conveyors use a rotating screw in a channel or
tube to move materials
• Spiral conveyors are used mainly for heating, cooling or
accumulation
• Sizes up to 48” diameter tubing and
can stack as high as 50 ft
• Used in the pharmaceutical, food,
and manufacturing industries
Chain Conveyors

• A conveyor on which material is transported along solid

pans by the scraping action of crossbars that are
connected by chains
• Relay logic and pneumatic control devices used to
control and program the chain
• Can handle loads of up to 10,000 kg
• Speeds of up to 60 fpm, but depend on size of object, for
safety reasons
Flight Conveyors
• Flight Conveyors are simple in design, sturdily
constructed of durable materials
• Provide an efficient, economical and dependable
conveying medium
• Flight conveyors are generally inclined at an angle of 45°
• Usually used in mining and coal
industries
Pneumatic Conveyor
• Pneumatic system, makes use of pipes or ducts called
transportation lines that carry mixture of materials and a
stream of air
• These materials can be transported conveniently to
various destinations by means of a stream of high
velocity air through pipe lines
• Pneumatic conveyors are either carrier systems or
dilute-phase systems; carrier systems simply push items
from one entry point to one exit point. Dilute-phase
systems use push-pull pressure to guide materials
through various entry or exit points
Applications in various industries
• Chemicals:- Pneumatic conveyors
• Food:- Belt conveyors , roller conveyors
• Paper :-
• Pharmaceutical
• Plastics
• Manufacturing
Benefits of conveyor systems
• Ergonomics – Because they do the work of load
movement, conveyors eliminate the chance of operator
injury from pushing or pulling a load
• Process flow - Conveyors can be used as a part of an
assembly or manufacturing process
• Safety – Because they move loads along a fixed path,
conveyors eliminate the chance of collisions associated
with forklift or manual product movement
• Speed – Conveyor speed can be set to accommodate
slow and peak demand periods
• Transportation – Conveyors facilitate the internal
movement of totes, cases or pallet loads throughout a
facility with minimal or no labor required
