ADVENT SEASON
What is “advent”?
In Latin “Advent” means “the coming.”
During the Advent season, Christians across
the world prepare for the coming of the
Lord, the birth of Jesus Christ into our
world.
The first Sunday of Advent marks the beginning
of the Christian Church's year.
The Advent Wreath
The wreathe is a circle, which has no
beginning or end: So we call to mind
how our lives, here and now,
participate in the eternity of Gods plan
of salvation and how we hope to
share eternal life in the Kingdom of
Heaven.
Three of the candles are purple to
emphasize our hope in God's promise
fulfilled in the Nativity; one is pink to
emphasize the joy of the Coming.
So, the color for Advent Season is…
URPLE
The First Candle:
A time of expectation and hope.

INK The Second Candle:

The peace that is to come.
The Third Candle:
The joy for the promise is almost fulfilled.
The Fourth Candle:
The love of God for mankind.
The central location of the Christ Candle
(white) reminds us that the Incarnation is the
heart of the season; giving light to the world.
Pink Candle:
Gaudete Sunday, we
rejoice because our
preparation is now half-
way finished.
Gaudete in Latin means
“rejoice”
Four Candles:
The four weeks of
Advent, represent the
four centuries between
the time of the Prophet
Malachi and the birth of
Christ.
ADVENT VS. LENT
While Lent is characterized by fasting and a spirit
of penance, Advent is a time of preparation that is
marked by prayer.
